I had read an article recently about gators moving into Tennessee, outside of Memphis.

They got help getting north...

“The story, supposedly, is the alligators were brought here in the (1930s and 1940s) to help with beaver overpopulation,” said Dr. Karen Sheppard, the city of Huntsville’s animal services director.
It was a different time almost a century ago, Sheppard said, a time when alligators could be brought to a city to eat the beavers and reduce their impact of backing up water. “I don’t think there were any permits associated with moving them, but the thought was they were having a lot of trouble with beavers backing up moving water, as beavers do,” Sheppard said. “And so from there, they have just established a nice breeding population, and they continue to spread out. And they’re here to stay, and the federal and state agencies, they’re protected. And they want us, you know, to leave them alone.”

They are spotted frequently in the Tennessee River and side streams around Huntsville and Decatur.
