Be sure and read Tim Carney’s Examiner column today on the politically-connected lobby for the controversial new TSA scanners that are upsetting airline employees and travelers everywhere. Carney notes that a company called Rapiscan got a $165 million contract for the new body image scanners four days after the underwear-bomber incident this past Christmas. Not surprisingly, Rapiscan is politically connected, observes Carney:

Rapiscan got the other naked-scanner contract from the TSA, worth $173 million. Rapiscan’s lobbyists include Susan Carr, a former senior legislative aide to Rep. David Price, D-N.C., chairman of the Homeland Security Subcommittee. When Defense Daily reported on Price’s appropriations bill last winter, the publication noted “Price likes the budget for its emphasis on filling gaps in aviation security, in particular the whole body imaging systems.”

Then this morning Carney also noted that former Homeland Security secretary Michael Chertoff was flacking for Rapiscan.

As for the company’s other political connections, it also appears that none other than George Soros, the billionaire funder of the country’s liberal political infrastructure, owns 11,300 shares of OSI Systems Inc., the company that owns Rapiscan. Not surprisingly, OSI’s stock has appreciated considerably over the course of the year. Soros certainly is a savvy investor.

Note that OSI Systems CEO is Deepak Chopra, but it appears to be a different Deepak Chopra than the more famous liberal new age guru.

Every government contract is awarded based on political connections. Even the ones that are well run had to have connections to get the contract in the first place.

Soros also owns 60K shares of CarMax (a value of ~800K vs ~400K with OSIS) what crooked deeds is he orchestrating through them?

This is chump change compared to the $21 billion awarded to Halliburton in no bid contracts (much of it for uncompleted/shoddy work). I dont like what you are pointing out in your post, but where's the outrage over this obscene misuse of taxpayer's dollars. This was nothing more than robbery of the American people. I don't even have to say who was the former CEO of the company do I? Both parties have their shady deals. I know you are an ultra conservative and try to paint Democrats in the worst possible light, but let's be honest here if we are pointing out possible shady political deals. To paraphrase, don't point out a splinter in someone else's eye when you have a board in your own.

Who could have performed the Halliburton contract work otherwise?

Halliburton didn't perform the work either. Thats my point. You would think they would have allowed bids to appear to have some legitimacy. Even an ultra conservative should be able to see that the taxpayers were the victim of the all time greatest corporate welfare scam. I hate our welfare system where people are rewarded for doing nothing. Halliburton did basically the same thing. I think you would file a lawsuit or get law enforcement involved if you hire a contractor to do some work on your home, paid him up front, and then the work was never completed. I don't care which side did this, everyone should be up in arms over this criminal taxpayer fleecing.

Link? Power/ wiring issues....double billing, bribes, etc. I would think this would have conservatives outraged. Talk about government waste. Eisenhower's farewell address comes to mind...'Beware the military-industrial complex.'

Note: don't know why the CNN and NY Times links aren't working, but check them out. Very interesting. Over 280 electrical fires on US bases(one completely leveled a Marine base) 18 military deaths due to electrocutions in relation to shoddy wiring. Worth the time to look up own your own even though you can't just click the link.

I wonder what your contributions to this forum would start to look like if we could bar you from posting images for a month...

You wouldn't get the picture?? :)

Now it is learned that Homeland Security Secretary, Janet Napolitano is considering an exemption for Muslim women!

This is what the Forum For Middle East Understanding (FFMU) calls closing the loop on an insane circle.

Every one of the incidents that has led to increased screening procedures was spawned by Islamic terrorists but in the name of diversity, innocent Americans—including women and children—routinely get x-rayed and/or molested (and possibly 4th Amendment rights violations) while a group that more closely fits the profile of attackers may be exempt.

If they were all attachments, and not links, I would be going through their least significant bit to try to find the messages you were sending.

I'm still not sure I shouldn't, though.

Also no. Like the quote.

Zeke used to do a Furry tribute act to try to keep that kind of music alive but I don't think he has been doing it lately.

How about Gimmer Nicholson?

Did you ever hear of the 'Agitators'? Lee, that had that band owned Furry's old guitar. Furry told me that 'When the Saints go Marching In' was his favorite song, my favortie song that he did was 'Dig My Grave With a Silver Spade.'

No doubt you have heard of 'The Memphis Horns?'

When it comes to pithy political humor, I don't think P J O'Rourke can be beat!!

So that makes it ok? Businesses that do this eventually get beaten by the competition, the ones giving the contracts to the companies most deserving.

There needs to be more accountability with the govt spending on all levels.

I was listening to someone on the radio talk about how Israeli handles the security at their airports. We are doing it wrong. They do selective searches, to what they view as high risk travelers. Is their anyone who doesn't think this is what we should be doing?

Not saying it's okay, but it's not exactly something you can point a finger of blame at a specific person or party.
