That was infinitely worse than Georgia losing to South Carolina. Memphis was a 1st-year Conference USA team at that point. Hell, Tennessee losing to Memphis in 1996 might be one of the most inexplicable losses of all-time.

Alabama's average recruiting class from 2016-19 was 2nd in the country. Kirby's was 3rd. Yes, he beat Saban by 4 spots in 2018. That's just one year. Saban beat him by 5 spots in 2016, 2 spots in 2017, and 1 spot in 2019.

He certainly hasn't recruited better than Saban, and if you want to get technical he hasn't recruited perfectly equivalent to him either. He's been just a notch, a small notch, below. I don't think any program in the country has recruited as good as or better than Saban on any timeframe longer than a single year. If you believe the recruiting services, Georgia's teams are marginally less talented than Alabama's. Georgia definitely doesn't have as good of a QB as Alabama does, a key position. Kirby has recruited almost as good as Saban, not better or just as good. The 2018 class in particular was obscenely talented, more talented than Saban's, but it was also just one year.

Anyway, your ultimate point is correct, which is that "lack of talent" isn't the reason he hasn't been able to bring a title home. If Kirby was asked why he can't beat Alabama and his response was "Well, we've had the #3 average class nationally over the last 4 years, and Alabama's had the #2," that wouldn't be a satisfactory answer.
