This is a great blog post. My knee jerk reaction is to defend the coaching staff. The scenarios present here make me wonder about that.

Don't get me wrong I think Butch needs some time before he can be accurately evaluated. But some of the criticisms that the "negavols" have been posting are illustrated pretty well here.

It gave me a moment of pause.

With all that said, its "crunch time" for the new coaching staff. They better keep an awesome recruiting class together and do something with it...fast! If recruiting drops off next year CBJ is going to find his seat warming up faster than Hiroshima in 1945.

I think Jones and company are up to the challenge, in general. But, this is the SEC... NO, this is Tennessee. We are accustomed to winning and we won't wait as long for progress as other fan bases.

Fair or not, good for the program or not, he needs to get it done now. That's were we are IMHO.

I tend to think of it the other way. All those show that we had players lined up correctly, which will solely be on the coaching staff. They did not do their assignments which they are supposed to, which can be said both ways. Coaching / talent.

Good read, I love the pics to back up his points being made. This team definitely has it's problems. And where they originate from is hard to determine.

You could say we missed a lot of assignments and got beat in our blocking schemes, but I think some of that is also on the youth and lack of God given talent. Our tight end getting beat for instance. He's not that big and is not a great blocking tight end. That's not a coaches fault. I still think we look better than last year just by the effort and how we finish. Hopefully the talent coming in will bring the rest of what you need to win.

So I took a few things from this that I hope we improve on. This is a mix of fault on coaches and players:

1.) D-line coach needs to really do a better job on drilling leverage and teaching the D-lineman to play low to the ground. Also the players need to spend additional time practicing that. I notice that all season that Hood and McCullers stand straight up when the balls snaps

2.) Weight room. These players need to take the weight room seriously this off-season. I mean seriously. They need to not only go hard in their scheduled session but spend additional time there. We get blown off the ball, and constantly getting beat inside on plays.

3.) Coaches and fans should know after three years that run blocking isn't this Oline's strength.

4.) This defense not only needs more speed but seriously needs to work on technique. Having proper techniques will help with our lack of speed. Coaches need to spend more time coaching this.

5.) Lastly our players need to do a better job executing. From what I read our coaches had the right plays called and our player failed to execute fully. Our players take way too many plays off.

Seeing our DL get owned in the examples in the article made me laugh. I feel bad for the DL because they've had a new DL coach every year, but my goodness... The DE getting blocked across the field to the opposite hash mark was hilarious.

Both lines have been abysmal all year. I'm willing to give the coaches a pass on that simply because I don't think the upperclassmen on the lines have really been that coachable. Their play certainly didn't reflect the rah-rah comments they've been making all season. Hopefully the next guys up can prove that the coaches know what they're doing.

1.) Best Defensive staff in the country and you question them?
2.) I agree
3.) At some point This 0-line got blown up as the best In the Country and ended up never touching the top 20 o-lines in the country! When we let O-line coach Pitman go we took a step backwards again.
4.)Agree. When you have DE type speed playing LB the proper angles is a must . Chavis all ways lined his LB's up at an angle to where if the play was right and if all 3 LB's run right they wasn't all hung in a pile by 1 blocker. so many times this season I see 1 blocker taking out 2 LB's.
5.)At some point as a Coach You have to hold players accountable for this or it will continue. If you tell me to stay off the grass and I still walk on it every day with no consequences I will soon shoot you the bird and keep walking on the grass.

On the play where Vandy scored, the color commentator even pointed out that our LB was not deep enough. Sure enough, the LB got caught up in the OL and couldn't recover to make the play.

Kinda sad when the color commentator knows more than the player or his coach.

Good blog and good analysis...I do believe it is a mix bag of coaching and players missing assignments. I would have loved to see this line coached by Coaches Fulmer and Cutcliff for 4 years. (may regret saying this but it would have been interesting and it is what it is)

We are loosing the battle in the trenches every game on both sides of the ball. With Bray we were always one dimensional offensively and this heralded line suffered as a result.

Tennessee football has always been winning this battle and adding the talent around it.

:)

But seriously, this is some excellent analysis. Thank you.

This is the one that bothered me most about the staff this year as some of these players have been making the same mistakes for 3-4 years and if they have not gotten by now put them on the bench and give the younger players a shot. Could the results have been any worse I do not think so.

The article also highlights what I've said all season that cbj took a chance stuffing his system down these players throat.

He is trending like rich rod at Mich n that first year should have played to the players strengths n made a bowl now he is one yr in the hole. Rich recruited well but shoved his system in place to soon.

You might be right, but at least on defense I would have been even more pissed if he'd let them continue running the disaster that was Sal's 3-4. It's kinda a damned if you do, damned if you don't deal on that side of the ball.

I'm also not sure we had the QB or WRs to continue running the O from last year. It's tough to tell with the injuries at QB.

Seriously? You're going to put that same comment here as well. Different situations and different people. I'm of the opinion that there is only 1 UT. And comparing one coach to another coach is a mistake as well.
I'm sure the OL/OC coach said to 85, "Get beat inside and let the DE/DT mess up the play" I also believe the DC/DL coach told the DE to get blocked all the way across the field. And yes I am being sarcastic.

Sometimes it just comes down to execution and these players didn't execute and do those little things well that win the game.
