Like many of you, I'm very relieved that we won tonight against Belmont and got off the shnide. Here are some observations I was able to take away from this game:
1) Belmont is a good basketball team. They deserve some credit; they played great defense, and were able to hang in there with a Tennessee team that is clearly more talented than they are. They were very competitive tonight.
2) Scotty Hopson played a great game; he finally stepped up and performed to his potential. He needs to put together more performances like this one and lead this team by his example.
3) I will say this again: Steven Pearl has a particular role to play. However, his playing time needs to be trimmed, because he continues to make very bad decisions and bad plays. I still do not believe that he needs to be benched permanently, but Bruce does need to cut his playing time until he can deliver good results.
4) This team is not shooting well at all. From the field, from the line, and from outside the arc; their numbers have been marginal at best. During this Christmas holiday, they need to refocus and get ready to come back to take some serious shooting drills, because we are getting into the real meat of the schedule, and the room for error is shrinking fast.
5) Those of you griping about this win are completely out of touch with reality and deserve to be laughed at or slapped. Should we be satisfied with a one-point victory over Belmont? Of course not. Should we be satisfied that we won to break a rare and perplexing three-game skid? Yes. A win is a win, ladies and gentlemen. Just be happy. We have a lot of things to work on, but a good basketball team will do what a good basketball team normally does: go back to work and fix it. Tennessee has lots of basketball left to play. Enough with the whining and complaining and enjoy the win.
