The trillion dollar tax fight - Lisa Lerer - Politico.com

By now, everyone knows Rep. Charles B. Rangel is poised to introduce the “mother” of all tax reforms, the biggest and most expensive tax code overhaul since 1986. But what they don’t know is how the New York Democrat plans to pay the more than $1 trillion price tag — and that uncertainty is fueling rampant speculation from Capitol Hill to K Street.

The classic Washington guessing game is frustrating anxious corporate lobbyists but amusing others, including the House Ways and Means Committee chairman who started it all. “It is surprising how nervous people get when I use the words ‘fairness’ and ‘equity’ to describe our efforts to simplify the tax code and encourage economic investment,” the New York Democrat told Politico.

The fiscal fortunetellers fall into four categories: Robin Hoods, Goldilockses, Chicken Littles and Scarecrows.

The Robin Hoods predict Rangel will increase taxes on the very rich and expand breaks for the poor. Rangel’s most talked-about goal is to eradicate the alternative minimum tax, expected to hit 23 million high- and middle-income families this year.

Thoughts?

The bigger government gets, the more money is needed to run it. Guess the Dems are hypocritical of the spending problems they blamed on the GOP. Oh well, you know how to tell if a representative is spending you money in Congress?? His lips are moving.

Hey... you know how you tell if a representative is lying? His lips are moving.

In any event, GOP has no room to talk when it comes to reckless spending. Esp. during the Bush II regime.

Before accusing the Dems on bigger spending let's find out what the difference between this plan and the previous Republican one was. The odd thing here is the ending of the AMT which the GOP has talked about but has yet to end. I have to even give credit to Rangel for even making a move to reform the tax code to begin with. You'd figure with several years of GOP control of the two relevant branches of government that this would have already been done. It's great we got tax cuts. But lack of major tax reform and a massive increase in federal spending isn't exactly noteworthy for the GOP to give them room to accuse anyone else of doing what they did...all while labeling themselves as fiscally conservative.

1. Just because Rangel introduces it, doesn't mean the Democratic Party is for it. Rangel also introduced the bill last year requiring some form of national service for all, which conservatives used to lambaste Dems in the '06 electiions (to little avail), but it got nowhere.

2. Somebody has to make the politically tough decisions to pay for the spending frenzy of the last seven years, and we know which party is now the party of fiscal responsibility.

3. That plan sounds great to me. I'm in.

100% correct. There is not a politician alive that can reasonably or logically sell that package anymore.
