How funny. Not even an hour ago, a friend of mine had mentioned that I should read this article (he mentioned one in Bloomberg so I assume he was talking about this one) because it is nearly verbatim my opinion on the matter. After reading the article, turns out he was right. :)

Health Insurance was never intended to be used for belly aches and sinus trouble. It was there to protect people from huge loses if something major happened. The biggest problem is the abuse of the current system. Parents taking their kids to the emergency room because they vomit one time or run a temp above 98 degrees. You cant regulate common sense and thats what would save more money and stop the steady rise in the cost of health care in this nation.

This problem will only be compounded if the government gets its hands on it. A person only needs to look at TennCare to see how bad that was economically for the State of Tennessee and see what will occur nationally.

I realize that such a change back to health insurance as insurance will negatively affect me - my current plan is pretty sweet but I'd be willing to go to this type system over a tax-based; govt run system any day.

Mine is sweet but the city government that I work for is self-insured. They take a large amount of money each year and have an insurance company(BCBST) overlook that money. My premiums for family is $152 per check(every 2 weeks) and thats with a $2000 deductible on major medical. We also have to pay out of pocket for all emergency room visits up until that deductible amount is met.

What makes our plan better is the city also bid out a contract for a local clinic to handle minor medical issues. So we can go to the clinic and it will cost us nothing out of pocket. The city saves money because it stopped a lot of the overusage of the insurance for emergency room visits when they were not necessary.
