If Serrano is hired, who was the last coach that UT hired in ANY sport with similar to Serrano's accomplishments?

I can't believe I heard it on the SportsAnimal early afternoon guys.

Tennessee has a history of battlefield promotions and hiring of mid-major guys. Who was the last coach in any sports that won on a major level before coming to Tennessee?

The one name was Johnny Majors who won at Pitt. Even that came with a caveat.

So hiring Serrano would represent a complete change of tactics on The Hill. A guy with a complete work history.

I hope and pray with Holbrook out of the picture we get Serrano!

I agree. With an athletic department in turmoil, a "sure thing" hire would chill out the natives. Even if I don't approve of his level of education, he's the best option right now.

Yesterday morning, I said that Holbrook was only looking for a raise from USC. I fetl strongly that he would not come to U.T.
As it is, it will turn out to be a blessing for us. There is a reason that he is an 18 yr. assistant coach!!!! He probably wouldn't have faired much better than Raleigh.

who cares about his level of education? he's there to teach them how to be a team, a better ballplayer, to win.. he's not there to teach them history, math, etc. thats what professors are for..

People that have a clue, care about the level of education for the Head Baseball Coach at The UNIVERSITY of Tennessee.

If the university felt it was ok to lower the job requirements, I'll go along with it. Maybe I wouldn't care as much if Serrano hadn't acted as if his "degree" is legitimate.

so since you feel Serrano isnt educated enough to be the new baseball coach, who would you want?

did Torre ever have to coach players that needed a passing grade to play?

Who would've been your choice, between Holbrook and Serrano? Just curious (knowing Holbrook is out).

Read my posts again. I'm approving the hire.

I simply think it looks bad and sets a weak precedent.

No but if the guy has already proven that he can coach players and get them to pass, why does he need a piece of paper? To validate the money that everyone else spent on their degree?

really? Interesting

if the Pres is making a statement about academics and sports at UT then it's going to be very hard for him to justify this hire.

you know, i might be wrong, but he might not be the only guy to coach that doesn't have a degree.. if he can coach up players and make them better ballplayers and better citizens, and put some winning seasons together. then im all for him. i dont care about a degree. he's supposed to be there teaching them about the game of baseball and life.

If I thought Holbrook was still in, I would still rather have Serrano. Serrano is the quickest path back to success for a program that was run into the ground.

I see your point but I think that statement is a bit of a pr move. If the team wins nobody is going to care about the coach's level of education.

maybe but he's not going to win right away at UT so it will be an issue. APR drops and he's got a mess on his hands

Valid point. He will catch heat for a mess he didnt create. Thats were a good AD would be helpful. Think i'll crap in one hand and wish in the other to see which happens first.

PJ here's my issue. Based on what I've read, Hamilton wanted Serrano. If you are on the BOT or the baseball committee and you KNOW Cheek won't allow it, why insult the man by bringing him in at the last moment, string him along for weeks to say: Thanks for dropping by Dave, but that degree issue is a no go for us. Thanks for your time as an assistant here and good luck in the future.

That doesn't make them smart, it makes them A-holes.

why did Dooley keep trying to get his players in school? Sometimes you keep trying until it's definitely over. I have really no idea what's going on over there though (and doubt many really do)

I don't know, you'd be better off asking Saban, Nutt or Petrino, don't really see the point. Isin't that their job as SEC football coaches, trying to get kids to school no matter what?
