From 247. It's two days old, so if posted somewhere else, please delete.

"Jennifer Coney, the mother of No. 1 overall recruit Rashan Gary, said Sunday while she “loves Auburn,” she isn’t yet sure how much of a factor the Tigers will be moving forward with her son, a 5-star defensive tackle at Paramus Catholic (N.J.).

The reason: How outgoing Tigers defensive coordinator Will Muschamp handled his departure, she told AuburnUndercover.

“Last Monday, Coach (Lance Thompson and Coach Muschamp came to the house. I was hearing all kinds of coaching things so I asked them,” Coney recalled. "Coach Thompson said he loves Auburn and plans on being there. Coach Muschamp said the same thing. He said he had put his family through a lot. He had moved nine times. He had moved his kids from school to school and wanted some stability. He said he promised his son stability through high school. He knew he wasn’t going anywhere — Auburn was where he’s going to stay. Of course, that was a lie."

She continued, “Now I know, If you get a head coaching position, of course you might leave. But he should have been honest. He should have said, ‘Well, if I get the opportunity.’ I would respect that. I would have understood. It’s a job for them. But he didn’t. Muschamp is a liar. A pure liar. … If I had his number I’d call him."

According to Coney, she spoke via telephone with Tigers coach Gus Malzahn on Sunday.

“He said he was blindsided,” Coney said. “He seemed like he was being a genuine guy, too. They all do. Muschamp seems like a genuine guy. (Malzahn) didn’t tell me when he found out, so I don’t know. I like him. They said they were coming this week, but who’s going?"

Gary and his mother officially visited Auburn last weekend and had a “good time," she said. While Michigan holds a big lead in the 247Sports Crystal Ball, sources at Auburn thought post-visit the Tigers were possibly in his top two.

“There’s nothing wrong with Auburn,” Coney said. “I love Auburn."

The question now: Can Auburn remain a contender?

"I don’t know,” Coney said. “I'm in the business world. If you bring representatives to me and one of your representatives tells you a blatant lie and almost immediately you find out they’re lying, well, what does that say about your organization?” Coney said. “In doing that, you make Auburn look bad. I’m not saying anything bad about Auburn. I like Auburn. I can see my son at Auburn. But these things happen for a reason. It just made me and Rashan realize, do not commit because a coaching staff is great. You cannot depend on these people. Am I upset at Auburn? No. I’m hoping they’re telling the truth when they said they were blindsided by this. I’d think they’d be smarter than to send him on a recruiting trip knowing he wasn’t going to be there. Thompson and (defensive line coach Rodney Garner) could have come.”

According to Coney, she still hasn't heard from Alabama or Georgia, two other contenders, since coaching changes were made or announced. Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh, who lost defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin in recent days, “called me Thursday and explained to me how it all works and what a defensive coordinator does."

Coney, like others, will wait to see who Auburn hires to replace Muschamp, then move forward.

“This is my son — I want my son around a good group of men who are accountable men,” Coney said. “In Rashan’s life, I want him to be accountable for everything he does and everything he says. I’m giving him to you — give him good character. Good morals."

Not to stick up for Muschump but I wonder what the Michigan DC told him (as you know he left also)

Sounds like a smart lady

She just learned that a really good recruiter is just a really good salesman, and a really good salesman is just a really good liar

Yeah, she seems a little naive. Would she consider her son a liar for de-committing from a school if he changed his mind about where he wanted to go? College football is a business and the so-called 'lying' goes both ways between recruits and coaches.

I like having Muschamp at South Carolina. Should be a real three ring doozy for the next two or three years.

She confirms that he told her he hadn't heard from SCar at that time and Gus confirmed (or covered for Will), yet she still calls him a liar. She looks like the idiot.

The only salesmen that lie are stupid salesmen. Last thing you want is to get caught feeding one of your accounts/customers/recruits a line.

In business, you don't shake off the stink of being dishonest.

I'm astounded that USC hired him. It's rare to hire a guy who's been sacked--and very recently--at another school, and doubly weird because Muschamp was fairly terrible in Gainesville.

South Carolina is apparently known for hiring head coaches who are one job removed from calling the shots at Florida

Malzahn is lying too..it was well known that Muschamp was gone after the season...Gus was forced to take him and they didn't get along and the defense was worse than last year

Auburn's AD will overnight her a suitcase full of the Benjamins, and all will be well.

I feel sorry for SC fans. My GF is an SC grad, I know a lot of folks up there and they are pissed to say the least. And I myself am extremely disappointed
in Ray Tanner, a man who I had ultimate respect for. His job is on the line with this hire. The blatant stupidity of it all is just mindboggling.

He also had an 11-2 season and won a BCS bowl at UF. I think Muschamp is an idiot who just needs to stick to being a DC instead of a head coach. You've got to gave some level of self control to be a HC. However, I think for USC he could be their Zook and stock the cupboard for a few years for the next guy. The guy can recruit and coach defense if nothing else. I think they could have done worse considering they were in a desperate situation, getting turned down by several coaches like UT did before they hired Dooley. Having said all that, I look forward to UT hopefully beating him into submission on a yearly basis for the forseeable future.

I think Muschamps failures at Florida had more to do with Foley hiring Weiss..not Muschamp...Foley pressured him to hire Peace over Kerwin Bell....and by the time Roper got there..the offense had no identity. I like the fact that those are lessons learned on someone else time and money. Now that you know what 'not' to do, it's full steam ahead from there. This was an excellent hire.....

The SCe fans I know seem to be in a minor form of denial. Surprised and hoping for the best.

This is rather dumb. Muschamp and Richt Rod were always the leading contenders at USCe. Spurrier campaigned for Muschamp. It's a game. If Harbaugh called her and told her how it all works, hopefully he told her all DCs would do the same thing Muschamp did. If she's in control of her son's final destination, that kid might be screwed. His best option might be to flip to the school of his choosing on signing day and hope daddy signs the papers.

Muschamp went 4-8 at Florida...Florida!

I was going to type this exact thing. Dude lost 8 games, in modern times, at Florida.

Besides his fluke 11-2 year, much like Florida is having this year, he went 18-19 in the other three seasons. At Florida. SC can have him.

Wasn't Muschump hired by the AD and not Malzahn? Seems like that was the chatter down on the plains.

Anyway, the biggest problem with this story is her son is looking at the wrong schools. Knoxville should be in his sights if he wants to win and then go to the league.

Wonder how Rashan feels about it? I mean, is the mother planning on playing or is Rashan? And I get that parents want to make sure their kids are taken care of but come on; she's making a mountain out of a mole hill. Muschamp's name was tied to the SC job almost as soon as it opened up.
