GOP cancer: Party could lose 20 more seats - John F. Harris and Josh Kraushaar - Politico.com

The Republican defeat in Tuesday’s special election in Mississippi, in a deeply conservative district where, in an average year, Democrats cannot even compete, was a clear sign that the GOP has the political equivalent of cancer that has spread throughout the body. Many House GOP operatives are privately predicting that the party could easily lose up to 20 seats this fall.

Combined with the 30 seats that the GOP lost in 2006, that would leave the party facing a 70-vote deficit against Democrats in the House — a state of powerlessness reminiscent of Republicans’ long wilderness years in the 1960s and ’70s.

Things are not particularly more hopeful on the Senate side, where most analysts say Democrats have a strong chance of adding five or more seats to their current majority.

Ouch! The good news would be after another cycle of democrat promises with no results the people should be tired of them too. Then maybe this country will start to address the real problem which is politicians and not the particular party.

Now where did you find that? Wherever it was, I am sure they neglected to mention that if this actually did happen, there was a reason and it was monitored by the election committee. Considering the political makeup of the area, I am sure the election committee is at absolute worst split down the middle when it comes to party preference.

emain, I heard on the radio (so take that for what it is worth) that black churches in Mississippi had literature handed out claiming a repub was a member of the KKK or white power organization. Have you heard anything about that?

It doesn't matter. Childers is a republican in democrat clothing.

I think a big part of this is republican voters unhappy with the party abandoning the conservative principals they believe in. There are not many true conservatives to chose from theses days.

This is true enough, then Childers comes out and distanced himself form Obama and Pelosi, taking away the association game part of politics. The Dems are doing a great job of reconizing solid candidates(conservitaves, moderates) to run against bad, or vulnerable Rep. candidates. But, I would also say that with the historically low numbers for congress and senate, you may see a huge turnover on both sides. And with that the new Democratic candidates coming out against their party leaders, how far center right, and center left might we see the congress and senate end up after the 08' elections, and would that be a bad thing?
