"A name to monitor. Not sure if anything goes on there but has ties to James Wilhoit. Where does TN feel they are at kicker?"
- AP

We need a legit punter and someone who can kickoff out of the end zone. Paxton is below average on both....

Paxton's has done exactly what he's been coached to do on both.

Heupel doesn't like our coverage unit so he does those high short kicks that also create a higher probability of causing a turnover

Which indicates he likes our coverage. If he didn't he'd kick it out of the endzone.
What?
No. No!
God ...

(Sigh)

You do that to give the coverage time to get in position while pressing the receiving to fair catch or return a contested punt or kickoff.

When you have 4 and 5 stars on kickoff trying to earn playing time, you kick it deep and try and let your athletes go pin them before they hit the 15 yard line.

While we are causing fair catches but our opponents are starting at the 25. That's better in the coaches mind than them staring at midfield from big returns BECAUSE of our lack of high level athletes that could tackle in the open field...

He's fine with the coverage, Paxton can kick it out of the end zone and they're just trying to cause a turnover/stop them behind the 25 yard line.
He kicks it too frequently to the shallow endzone and it ends up getting returned. That’s why they stopped letting him kick it deep.

Maybe but the way we are doing it has worked really well this year.
Yeah it worked. When we did kick it deep and it didn’t result in a touchback the coverage was sketchy at best the last 2 seasons.

It felt like we gave Vandy some decent field position though.

Our special teams coverage unit has done a great job this year. That was one area we didn’t do our best against Vandy on. We let a few get out pretty good. But overall this year we kicked butt on kickoff coverage. There were many games we had folks catch it at the 5 and 10 yard line and we would stick them between 15-20 sometimes even better. GBO!
