Got granite countertops installed in my kitchen today. My cabinets are in an L shape, but I added a 20" X 72" bar for more counter space, so it's now a large U.

Where the bar meets the wall (the 20" part) I've got a wood beam screwed into the wall supporting it. That will stay. Trying to decide how to support the 6 feet out from the wall. Got a knee wall framed under there right now.

Anybody know how far granite can safely span a gap with no support? For a 72 inch span, I assume I need 2-3 beams under it to supplement the Horizontal wall beam.

Anybody have experience with this stuff?

I have a 5 1/2 foot span. I used a piece of square (2" × 2") aluminum running the entire span. I placed it directly in the middle and had concerns it would be visible. To be honest, we have never noticed it once, neither have any of our guests.

Opinion only, but better to risk visual obstruction than chance breaking the granite.

I'm partial to quartz, though, arguments can be made for a good quality laminate.
