Wow, was yesterday a great day for the softball team. 92 degrees at game time dropping to 65 or so by the end of the second game. Some people had blankets!
Erin pitched well. Her rise ball and change were both working. She was finding her spots on the plate and was very composed. Her velocity seemed good - 65 mph maybe? Difficult to tell by just standing there watching. Creighton I assume is not a great team but Erin did her job and was never challenged.
Matty Moss stumbled a bit in game 2. Her velocity is fantastic. Wow her pitches looked 5 mph faster than anybody else's on either team. Overstreet's glove was popping like a cannon on every catch. But Moss had no pitch variation in speed, no changeup, that I remember. And in the third inning she lost her spots after giving up the HR and couldn't find the strike zone. I'm sure she'll see better days.
Vines and Leach are the real deal. If you haven't seen them play - and I hadn't - they have a legitimate shot at being 4 yr AA. They were that good yesterday. They were aggressive on the base paths constantly challenging the opposing team's fielders. They were aggressive yet patient at the plate. They made the plays in the field when the ball was hit their way. No one is supplanting them from the lineup.
The rest of the team had their moments although in general Gregg, Geer, and McSwain need to step up. McSwain had a couple fielding bobbles (no errors charged to her however) and none of the three exactly knocked the cover off the ball although they made good contact a few times. There were a couple of lame strikeouts. Nothing major but come on let's go.
Overstreet was solid behind the plate. Nobody challenged her arm although there weren't that many opposing base runners for her to throw out.
Gaffin was typical Gaffin. Lots of low stuff that resulted in ground balls and strike outs.
There was one error in the field that I remember and several good put outs.
All in all a great first day for the softball team. On to day two.
