I see a lot of people complaining about Gruden`s record and the cost of hiring him. Some people seem to think it`ll take years for him to win the SEC. I say,"not so fast,my friend". We are hiring the face of MNF! He is a superstar on ESPN(capt obvious comments welcome). Every high school prospect has grown up watching him. He will be able to recruit lights out. It would be like John Madden walking into a prospects house. The public exposure of Gruden`s announcement will make a lot of commits change into Big Orange. He`ll be able to call any prospect in the US and say"Hey,I`m Jon Gruden. You may know me from ESPN. An autograph? Sure, but I was needing you to come play for me. Where? The University of Tennessee. One of the most storied progams in the nation. Yeah we have sucked recently and the SEC is tough, but I`ve got a fine foundation in place from the previous coach, and I`ve got a heck of a recruiting class shaping up. I want competitors. And UT has the toughest schedule in the toughest conference. I am going to win the SEC this year, but I need men who want a true challenge and an opportunity to compete against NFL talent every week. I also know a little about what it takes to make it in the NFL and believe I can best prepare you for the NFL here at UT. Now,are you a man that wants a challenge,or a boy that wants to sit on the bench for____and play pansy ass schools? Good, that`s what I need. Welcome aboard. We are starting a dynasty here at UT" I imagine the calls will go a little like that. When you have the levei of talent Grude will have shortly, and exceptional assistants, you don`t have to have a 888 win pct to deserve 6 mil..Gruden is worth 100mil$ at this point in our program. He will win early and often. I am fully confident we will win the SEC within 2 yrs&BCS in3. Like I said,we are getting John Madden`s equivalent. What`re your thoughts,VN.? GO VOLS!!!

That will work for 2-3 years

It will work for 2-3 years if there is no progress, but if we have progress and start winning big games then it will continue. Also if he's getting people into the NFL then it won't stop either. A LOT of recruits would rather have a coach who can get them into the NFL than one who is going to win him a NC ring. Don't get me wrong, most recruits would like both, but they want the money more than anything.

Exactly. Big-time prospects are all about getting prepped for the NFL. They wanna test their skills against the best and win NCs. UT is now the place to do it. We are NOT going to suck 2-3 yrs from now. We will be in top 10 continuosly..Hide and watch.

I like Jon Gruden, and think he will be an awesome HC, but I just don't see HIM being the recruiting influence on many other positions than QB that people think he will be. I'm in the same age group as the guys he would be recruiting, and I could give 2 craps less about him being on MNF. I think the HUGE benefit to Gruden coming is his coaching abilities and the recruiting power he would bring with him in a coaching staff. This isn't a knock to Gruden really, I just don't explicitly see how he is a power recruiter in the making. He's NOT what my age group talks about at all, he's just another face in the crowd at ESPN to a lot of kids my age. Again, the thing that really excites me about Gruden is his coaching ability, ability to develop a quarterback, and adapt his scheme to the team, rather than the team to his scheme, as well has the names he could bring here as coaches that would be major hits on the recruiting trail... Just my 2 cents.

I'll disagree for this simple fact: Just because you don't care about JG does not mean some other kid wouldn't. Gruden's high profile and being able to connect with kids via his Gruden's QB Camp and MNF can only help. Gruden knows what it takes to play on Sunday and that fits what a lot of young football players want---not all but some.

I don't disagree with anything you said, but you're refuting something I'm not arguing for. I'm saying, of all of the people I know my age, 20, I watch more football than all of them, hands down. I watch all of Gruden's QB camps, all of the MNF's, and everything like that, before Gruden to Tennessee was popular. I'm saying, he's not as big of a name as you think. He won his super bowl when these kids were in 2nd or 3rd grade. He has a background, but I'm saying his name doesn't send chills down the spines of people my age, unless they follow football as closely as we all do. I'm not saying he wont be able to sell himself, but I'm saying that his name isn't going to be the bombshell to all of the recruits like some think. His background, quite possibly, but his name and sexiness of his name aren't going to be as heavy with recruits as they are with people who have watched the game, and know who he is and what he's done in his career.
