Gundy on the OU/OSU rivalry

Poor Okie State. They are gonna end up being one of the red headed stepchildren of conference mergers.

Them, Wash St, Baylor, Oregon St all face very uncertain futures.

B12 and P12 could go a long ways towards securing their future with a merger.

I guess the same reason TAMU and TU didn't keep playing.
Their reasons for not playing are a little bit better than Texas/Texas A&M. Gundy isn't wrong when he says that if the SEC goes to 9 games, which is basically a given at this point, they won't want to schedule another P5 opponent.

Texas and TAMU haven't played just because they got their feelings hurt. Starting in about 2015 or so, they could have worked each other in. Just didn't want to.

i don't see any of the other SEC dropping their P5 rivals for a 9 game SEC schedule. And TU and OU have been playing a full round robin 9 game schedule, so its shouldn't be much of a change for them. Because the SEC isn't all that good or something.

I think my biggest issue with all of the expansion taking place is that games like these will no longer be played. It’s a shame . There’s zero reason for this game to no longer be played. If some SEC teams, Kentucky cough, Kentucky cough.. are going to bitch and moan about 9 games and start canceling their OOC Power 5 games that will be a true embarrassment. I think every team in the SEC, B1G, B12, ACC and whatever the PAC 12 might or might not be, should be required to play another P4 or P5 team. This is why I’m all for uniform scheduling within the big schools and having a czar or at least a committee that runs college football. Everyone should be playing by the same rules.

everyone was playing by the same rules: Every conference gets to set their own schedules.

Wonder why they can’t do like like some of the other SEC versus non SEC rivalries like Clemson/USCe, Florida/FSU and Georgia/Ga Tech?

Gundy: Bedlam rivalry with Oklahoma is 'history'
Losing Bedlam is a soul killer for OKSt.
They only have three historic rivals left from the Big 8: Iowa St, Kansas, and Kansas State. Not much to get excited about there. The rest of the Big 8 has left them behind.

I have a lot of respect for Gundy on the football field.
He defeats teams with more talent on the field than he could ever hope to recruit.
Reflects coaching at a high level. He has won 11 bowl games in 17 seasons, and very Fulmer-like 156-75-0 (67.5 pct.)
He won 3 Beldams and lost 15.
He may inflate his numbers in what is left of the Big 12, but will anybody be watching?

Tennessee was also one of the schools voting against a 9 conference game schedule. I’m not sure we have a lot more ground to stand on in arguments about that part.

Same goes for Kansas with Missouri over that time period.

I’m aware of that, but UK was quietly leading the charge over a year ago against a 9 games schedule and they’ve also discussed choices being made in scheduling when it came to other games, namely their in state Power 5 opponent Louisville. That’s why I singled them out.

With that record he wants the rivalry to continue? Yikes.

Honestly even if the SEC goes to 9 I’m 25 like they should, I still see the SEC/ACC games being played. And I still see others that don’t have a rival out of conference scheduling other P5 schools.

The underdog in these broken-up rivalries is typically the one who wants it to continue (see Texas/Texas A&M). There are still big monetary benefits to continuing it, which mean more to the smaller school, and from a performance on the field perspective they don't have as much to lose (i.e., if they rivalry continues and they still lose a lot, people expect that to happen anyway) so it doesn't look as bad.

That's honestly not much of a rivalry over the years. I know there have been some close game and some unexpected results the last 10 or 15 years but historically OU dominates OSU about like we do Kentucky.

OSU sees it as a huge rivalry, and honestly has more of a vested interest in playing it.

As a neutral, I actually think it's a pretty good, underrated rivalry game and I enjoy watching it. Even though as you said it has been incredibly one-sided historically, and even during the Gundy years even though OSU has had a bunch of good teams.

Even with it being one sided ,I can see why it's important to Gundy not just as someone who coached in the rivalry, but also played in it. It's not something I look forward to as much on the college football schedule compared to other rivalries, but I get the traditional argument for it seeing as it is a in-state rivalry, and doing away with it just because Oklahoma is joining another conference doesn't make sense.

Besides, a lot of traditional rivalries have been one sided until recently.
