I just got a message saying there were only 8.16MBs of free space on my hard drive, that there was not enough space left for the restore function. I have not added programs or files to cause this, after having a good two thirds of the hard drive free. Does anybody have a clue what is going on or what to do about it?

There are a lot of people on here MUCH more qualified to give advice on this topic than I but did you happen to create backup discs after you purchased the computer?

If it were me, I would take a look at the largest files on my disk and see if you have anything strange or that can be deleted.

Blues, I created backup on a 16G flash drive when the computer was brand new. Do I just patch it in with the computer off and then turn the computer on to wipe out everything and restore the original programs? I've kept this thing clean...no documents, no music, no pictures, and no videos. All those folders are empty. Windows 8.0 has so much junk on it that I don't know what it all does. There is one program which seems to have taken over the operating system. It's called Acer Remote, which showed up a week or two after I went online with the computer new. Acer owns Gateway. I tried to uninstall it, but got a message saying that the command was not valid. I don't know if I've been hacked or networked, but I cannot see what is causing this.

Freak, I cannot see any programs taking up unusual space. The hard drive should be far less than half full. Whatever is causing this does not show up as a file or program.

Thanks for the replies, guys. I tooled around for a while and finally managed to reload the entire system, which did clear the hard drive. BTW, I do not think this problem came from VN.

Had a system come into the shop last week, and it was loaded down with IE5 content in the System32\config folder. I couldn't even delete it all using a Linux live cd. Completely filled up almost 200GB. It looks like it's Java script files. The system was infected pretty good, but we cleaned it out and it didn't get rid of it. Only think left was a full format, which we did, and it cleaned it up just fine.

I read an article not too long ago about some maleware which fills up the hard drive. My settings were also messed up, which indicates an invasive program. I made a big mistake using my main email account on a big interactive sight. Some tech told me that maleware can penetrate without even opening an email. Just opening the page can let it into the system. Anyway, I formatted the C: drive and reloaded, which so far seems to be working.

As a self proclaimed IT Specialist, I recommend shoving a screw driver in your floppy drive and wiggling it around for a few minutes. If that doesn't work, open up the tower and pour some chocolate milk on the innards.

You're welcome.
