Another natural disaster of biblical proportions:

Reuters AlertNet - Haiti sees 140,000 dead, fears violence

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Jan 15 (Reuters) - Haitian authorities have buried 40,000 bodies and believe another 100,000 people probably died in this week's earthquake, a senior official told Reuters on Friday. Aramick Louis, secretary of state for public safety, also said gangs were starting to take to the streets and the government's main fear was a surge in violence.

It truly is a tragedy of Biblical proportions and once again the US will be bearing most of the cost.

Honestly, Haiti was a mess to begin with. It may end up being a net gain with all the international attention they are getting now. That sounds outrageous, but I have been there twice. It is a constant disaster area.

According to Al Goreski Haiti exibits an excellent example of having a very small carbon footprint.

Some of Sotomayor's people think it's an outrage that the US military is directing American aid to Haiti.

MINH condena militarización de ayuda humanitaria.

Excerpt from English translation:

The National Hostosiano Independence Movement (MINH) severely criticized the position taken by Puerto Rico Governor Luis Fortuño to subordinate Puerto Rican aid to the population of Haiti to orders from the United States Army's Southern Command.

"It hurts that Governor Fortuño conditions our aid to the dictates of the Southern Command. The militarization of humanitarian aid to Haiti which United States President Barack Obama promotes is an attempt to have the United States Army save face, something that is worthy of condemnation from our point of view," MINH Co-President Héctor L. Pesquera said.
