Seriously, Rasmussen did a recent poll and 26% of the respondees couldn't accurate say what we celebrate today.

I guess they think it's dependence day.

Here is an interesting light hearted account of Paul Revere's ride.

What Sarah Palin had to say flew over most people's heads, especially the liberals.

The following is a very good article with a short bio of all the signers of the declaration of independence.

What Do You Know About the Men Who Signed The Declaration of Independence - Gate

After they had concluded their work on the Constitution, Benjamin Franklin walked outside and seated himself on a public bench. A woman approached him and inquired, "Well, Dr. Franklin, what have you done for us?" Franklin quickly responded, "My dear lady, we have given to you a Republic--if you can keep it."

Ben Franklin was one of the more prominent of the founding fathers who were in favor of ending slavery.

The original bill of rights numbered 12 instead of 10 and one of those not passed called for the end of slavery, it didn't pass but the original founders of this nation decided to take what they could get and leave it to later generations to stop the practice.

Actually one of the many complaints against the British was the fact that the British were bringing in slaves and that put other colonists at a financial disadvantage as well as their objections on Christian religious grounds.

Another tidbit of trivia, although Adams and Jefferson famously passed away on the fiftieth aniversary of the signing of the declaration of Independence, only one president was born on the 4th, Calvin Cooledge.

Harry "Light Horse" Lee made a motion to declare independence on July 2nd, some thought that should be the American birthday and celebrated by future generations.
