From an Ole crusty military guy coming upon retirement soon... Thanksgiving is a very tough time for the teams that are out there. Vols football help tremendously but family can't be replaced. Thank God for being born in the USA and thank God for the teams out there that let us fry/smoke a turkey and live free.

Seconded. Becoming a father gave me a big dose of perspective on what it must be like for our service members and their families on holidays. Blessings to them, and to anybody else away from home during this Thanksgiving.

“From an Ole crusty military guy coming upon retirement soon” - Damn! What does that make me then? I’ve been retired 9 years! (I don’t feel crusty)

“Thanksgiving is a very tough time for the teams that are out there”- 100% true! My first time away I was in Korea. I woke up on Thanksgiving and immediately became depressed and didn’t want to do anything. But the plan was Thanksgiving dinner at the chow hall with us officers serving the enlisted, so I put on my dress blues and walked over to the chow hall. It ended up being one of my most memorable Thanksgivings ever! They had a huge spread and the food was great! We had turkey, ham, roast beef, shrimp cocktail, all the sides and desserts, and an ice sculpture that fell over and broke through a window! They had a team bring in a karaoke machine and everyone was taking turns singing, some took more turns than they needed. The battalion CO had a helluva voice, and was belting out “Unchained Melody” flawlessly. The XO did a fun rendition of “Bad, bad, Leroy Brown” that had us rolling! When Christmas rolled around, it didn’t hit me the same way and I was fine, but I’ll never forget how much my mood swung that day.

As you all know, Germany is ahead of the US timewise, so we celebrated Thanksgiving this last Sunday. (Actually it was just easier for us, my wife works on Thursday.) I fried a turkey for my daughter’s classmates at the university and they were amazed to see a turkey being fried! They even devoured our sweet potato casserole, and Germans are not as much sweet potato fans as us southerners.

Life is good! Happy Thanksgiving everyone! GBO!
