His first choice had to be a proven winner that would unite the UT fan base. There wasn't one of those around breathing the earth's atmosphere. Neyland is dead and that was the only choice.

His second choice was a proven winner that would unite most of the UT fan base. There were probably less than a handful of those (Gruden, Belichick, or Saban). None of those was available at what would seem any price.

Now, he had to turn to a proven winner that could re-establish a culture of winning at UT. He focused first on Strong and then Jones. It seems that he got what was realistically his 2nd choice. It is now up to Jones to unite the fan base --- a fickle fan base, indeed. He is going to have to win, win big games, and keep winning. Anything less will bring wolves to the revolving door. It is time to shut that door, lock it down, and be a long-term HFC at UT.

For me, he needs to beat one of the big 3 next year. Bama, Florida, or Georgia - or go 8 and 4. He needs to beat one of these guys every year and not lose to Bama and Florida for 3 years straight.

Folks, we need to get a grip.

Unless something horrible happens, which I seriously doubt, I would guess that Jones will have at least three years to work his magic. Setting W-L expectations or teams he "has" to beat is ridiculous.

Have we learned nothing from the irrational actions and expectations we all set during the Dooley debacle?

Maybe Hart will get the right coach in 2015. They say 3rd time's the charm.

Yeah since Butch Jones got a 6 year deal. We got a good coach out of this. Gruden was never comming here. Sumlin is at a great place now. And Butch Jones team beat Charlie Strong's team 2 out of 3 times. And everyone thinks Strong is a better recruiter and coach.

JMO, but your assumptions are faulty. While we'll never "know" who was or wasn't available or who was or wasn't pursued, IMO if Hart had been willing to pony up $4-5m per year for a coach there would have been a number of coaches who could have been hired that would have united the vast majority of the fan base. There are a lot of potential "splash" hires out there not named Saban or Miles (both college and NFL coaches). Arky got Bielema away from Wisconsin, and while he may not be a true "big splash," he's at least a medium splash, and they're only paying him $3.2m I think, which is barely more than we're paying BJ. There are a number of top notch guys who might not listen at $3-3.5m that would get very interested at $4.5-5m.

did anyone happen to see this article?

Jones expects to match SEC talent at Tennessee | Cincinnati.com | cincinnati.com

Peyton texted Jones during his courtship with Colorado, encouraging him to take the job in Boulder.

Sounds to me like Manning was trying to keep Jones, a candidate for UT at the point, to stay out of Knoxville.

I think Jones can be a good coach here but I think this a pretty glaring indication of how out of touch Hart was and is with the Volunteer community.

Fire the guy (Hart)

I've been getting behind Jones, though. I'm hoping that we have a change in culture. I just think the AD is the problem.

to pay $4 million + for a coach, yes? We certainly would have paid Strong more than $3 M--and I'm quite sure if Mora or Pelini or Fisher had been interested we would have paid more than $4 million. Problem was, nobody worth $4M+ was interested in the job--apparently--and as is we're surely overpaying Jones a bit. I think Hart should have made a run at Pelini.

wrong. UT did not consider Jones a candidate at that time.

How is Hart suppose to know who Peyton Manning is texting?

Jones was hired at UT a day after he turned the Colorado Job down. I'm assuming that after being shot down by two or three coaches, Jones had been added to Hart's "short list" (if he hadn't been there all along).

I'm also going to guess that Peyton, our most accomplished alumni and a huge donor, had some information on the the hire before the rest of us.

I admit that I am connecting some dots that aren't necessarily being reported. And I know that was what made the Gruden rumors so frustrating, at times stupid and, ultimately, counter-productive.

Im just adding some thoughts on a fouled process for the purpose of discussion.

I'm not saying Hart knew about this. I'm saying that perhaps, only perhaps, Manning was lobbying for a different coach at UT and/or thought Jones would be a better fit at Colorado.

As a booster he may have been part of a group of people who were reportedly frustrated with Hart's closed-door, autonomous hiring process.

I don't see why he would otherwise contact Jones. He is in his first season with Denver and while I am sure he has become a great part of the community there, probably doesn't have a stake in the CU hire.

Just conjecture.
