I've read where you've mentioned the SEC and ACC were both down this year. I've watched a handful of Big East games, some Pac 10 games, and some Big XII games. I've honestly only seen two or three Big Ten games this year. But I don't know that individual conferences are down this year as much as quality basketball is.

So, my question:

Is college basketball down as a whole this year, even with the mandatory one year rule, are there conferences I haven't seen yet (Mid Majors) or is there just very good parity between all the major and mid major conferences these days?

The top teams in several of the midmajor conferences can play with anyone. There's pretty good balance across the nation. The PAC 10 and the Big East are really, really good.

I would say the top 4 teams or so in the Pac 10 are good. In the Big East, the top 6-7 teams. The other 223 schools in the Big East, not so much.

The PAC 10 is at least 7 deep. The Big East will have a legitimate shot at putting 9 teams in the tournament.

I'll take your word for that. But with how much better teams like UCLA, GTown, UNC and Kansas are than everyone else this year, I think being the last 8 bubble teams admitted into the tournament is not that big of an accomplishment this year.

A lot of questions will be answered Saturday when the Hoyas go into the Fedex Forum to play the Memphis Tigers. Interesting you left Memphis off your list.

With what I've seen of Memphis so far, they are good. I still don't put them on the same level as the ones I mentioned. They'd be team #1 in the next tier.

If the Hoyas, who in my opinion, have the best player in college basketball, don't come out of FedEx with a win, I might change my mind.

The other ranking experts have them at #2. Still a young season though.

and they obviously know more than me. They get paid for it. But it's still my opinion and we'll see how things shake out. You're right though. Saturday will definitely be a telling day. I personally can't wait.

edit: I will add that these experts had Duke ranked #6, ahead of Pitt, despite the fact that anyone that has seen Duke play would know they are going to struggle against teams with a good inside game.

That is what I'm interested to see if the Tigers can handle with their inside guys. If Dorsey gets in foul trouble, can Taggart and Dozier keep their composure under pressure?

I don't think so. I think Hibbert is the best player in the country and has a monster game.

So, what you're saying is he can win this game by himself while being defended by at least 3 guys?

not at all. Summers, Freeman, Sapp and Wallace will contribute. Gtown is a very well balanced team. They have multiple ways they can beat you. If it's not Hibbert inside, Sapp and Wallace are good from beyond the arc. I just see Hibbert shining in the spotlight when it's all said and done.

This will be Gtown's first true test of the year and for Memphis to really. The past 3 games CDR has been flat. CDR knows this is a big game for them as does the rest of the team. Rose is now getting use to the Memphis Offence now, he had a good game vs. Cincy. Dorsey will have to have a good game also. Cal will have this team ready to go Sat. I have my ticket to the game and can't wait to use it. :hi:

i'm not sure about the pac-10.

both oregon and ASU lost to nebraska, cal hasn't played anyone really and our frontcourt is not deep at all, stanford lost to siena by double digits, arizona lost at home to virginia, USC lost at home to mercer, and OSU lost to Alaska Fairbanks and Tennessee Tech.

Oregon won at Kansas State. Arizona State annihilated Xavier. Stanford hasn't lost since. Arizona is now in the Top 15. USC was playing short 3 players in the opener. Oregon State is disgracefully bad. I haven't formed an opinion of Cal yet.

all good points. though as for stanford the best team they've played is UC santa barbara.

i see Cal as a 7-10 seed. highly unlikely to make it past the first weekend. i meant backcourt, not frontcourt btw in my previous post.

Gtown is so balanced no one on that team is averaging anything more than 25 min per game. Averaging 13 points and boards with that kind of time and their offense is pretty good in my opinion. He also averages over 2 blocks a game and is never in foul trouble. Pretty good for the big man.

i said this in another thread, but watching Memphis the other night, i couldn't help but think they reminded me of us. they rebound better and are a little more athletic, but overall the offensive style looked alot like TN. that and they are not real good from the stripe either.
