Hear me out… starting at Oklahoma, we saw Josh Heupel play in a conservative (run first and play the field position game) while leaning on the defense. To start that game, we drove down to their 40 and then punted on fourth and three. We’ve never seen him punt in that type of situation. Once we got a 20 point lead, we went almost exclusively to the run game even though they were loading the box. The only big shot we took in the 2nd half was the deep ball to bru. Following that pass we promptly ran 3 straight inside runs and kicked the fg.
It seems like it is safe to not take chances on offense when you have a lead and suffocating defense. But I’d argue it’s the more risky strategy. Because the other team is always within striking distance. If our defense hadn’t been playing so well these last couple of weeks, we would’ve likely seen a much more aggressively called offensive game. And I bet the house had not been so stubborn with the inside runs and taken more shots down the field, we’d have won.
