Quite possibly Fry's biggest impact on the sport is the number of successful coaches who played for and/or coached under him. His coaching tree includes former Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops, former Wisconsin coach Barry Alvarez, former Kansas State coach Bill Snyder, former Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema, former Iowa State and North Texas coach Dan McCarney and current college coaches Mark Stoops (Kentucky), Bo Pelini (Youngstown State) and Jay Norvell (Nevada).

Yep. His record on the field I've always thought was quite overrated but he had a huge impact on the sport, probably best evidenced by his coaching tree as you mentioned.

Pretty sure he brought the forward pass to the Big Ten.
Definitely a real good coach...90 is a good long life...RIP, sir.
Fry left Odessa HS and returned to Baylor to serve as an assistant on
John Bridgers staff in 1959 & 1960. It's here where Fry learned the Pro Style Passing Game as Bridgers had been the OC for the Baltimore Colts before coming to Baylor...thus making both branches of the Don Shula coaching tree.

After leaving Baylor Fry moved to Arkansas to coach under Frank Broyles who had been his position coach at Baylor. Bridgers later became the AD at Florida State that talked Bobby Bowden into leaving West Virginia and taking the FSU job.

He did a great job at SMU guiding them to a Southwest Conference Championship in 1966(7-3 SMU lost 24-9 to 9-1 Georgia in the 1966 Cotton Bowl) and guiding SMU to the Bluebonnet Bowl in 1968(7-3 SMU won 28-27 over 7-3 Oklahoma).

Possibly so, but the places he coached were not exactly known as football powerhouses.

Winning the B10 at Iowa is quite an accomplishment-for anyone. Especially back then before divisions when it was round robin. These days you could have a team like Minnesota this year for instance if they had somehow gone undefeated against a weak schedule where they avoided Michigan and Ohio State. Get into the conference championship and catch a lucky break and take down one of the big dogs then they are legendary based on having one good win all season. But I digress........

Fry took the SMU job on the condition that he would be allowed to recruit black athletes. SMU became the first SWC school to sign an African-American football player... All-American Jerry Levis. Baylor walk-on John Westbrook became the first African-American to play for a SWC team beating out Levis by an hour.

I think SMU quarterback Chuck Hixson and Iowa quarterback Chuck Long were the two best players he ever coached

University of North Texas will honor their former coach this weekend. He also coached SMU. It would be cool if the Mustangs would wear throwback unis too.

That uni looks like something from a create a team on the old NCAA games. I actually kind of like it.
