HBO - Saturday Aug 1st - 10:00 EST

Assault in the Ring will air on HBO Saturday at 10 p.m. ET, though Atonement might be more apropos.

The documentary looks at one of the most dastardly incidents in boxing history: the June 1983 non-title fight between Luis Resto and [Nashville's] Billy Collins Jr. at Madison Square Garden.

Resto, a journeyman from the Bronx with eight knockouts in 30 fights, pulled off an unlikely upset of the undefeated prospect from Nashville with a hammer of an uppercut.

Resto, however, had a secret weapon: A significant amount of padding was removed from both gloves, allowing him to inflict unusual and frightening damage to Collins' face

Luis Resto had denied that numerous times over the past quarter century. But, according to this report in today's Daily News:

"Resto added another heinous chapter to that sad story on Thursday when he admitted that Lewis also put plaster on the tape over his knuckles, encasing his fists in a cast inside of the gloves with the pad removed." [emphasis added]

Resto said he made the admission because he wanted to unburden himself. "Yes, I feel better," he said when asked if he was glad he finally told the truth.

It's a sad story in boxing history. Panama Lewis is still allowed to train boxers, though he hasn't trained anyone major since the 80's, with the exception of being an "training advisor" to Mike Tyson before his fight with Lennox Lewis.

I talked (email) to Rudy Kalis the sports director at WSMV 4 in Nashville, he was in the documentary a couple times. He said the Collins family was upset because they felt Resto gained so sorta fame from the HBO doc. He said the they (channel 4) did a documentary on the fight a couple years after it happened and it got some attention and won a few awards. He also said so of the footage used in the HBO doc. was from channel 4.

I thought it interesting that they implied Billy’s eye injury was not as bad as reported and that Collins Senior was basically using his son as a pawn in a lawsuit.

Yeah, it was the plaster that did it. Removing padding from a glove alone isn't going to result in any additional injuries in the ring other than maybe more cuts.

A LOT of guys have done the plaster thing before. And guys are still doing it. Seriously dangerous.
