HC that is climbing the ladder?

Butch Jones (excellent winning records and conference championships at Central Michigan and Cincinatti)

Sonny Dykes (rated as a top assistant and recruiter at Texas Tech, very successful as OC at Arizona, HC at La Tech has them in the top 25 in his 3rd year).

Mark Hudspeth (extremely successful Div. II coach at N. Alabama. Assistant coach in Dan Mullen's best year at Miss State. Won 9 games in his first year as HC at Louisiana Lafayette. Nearly beat Florida yesterday)

It's interesting that Dykes would actually look like a fairly viable candidate on paper if our current coach hadn't also come from La Tech. As it is, the fanbase would throw a fit if we hired him.

I just don't believe that the AD has much latitude when it comes to reaching for a coach because of the Dooley experience. You're pretty much limited to a big name hire.

Yeah, I hope cooler heads prevail, because Dykes looks like he could really be an excellent coach and could do great things with a big program.

My hope is the concern is less "pleasing the fanbase" (I mean, seriously, plenty of the fanbase are morons who were happy when they hired Dooley) and more about finding a the best bet to win big here. That's what will please the fanbase in the end.

Thing is, as far as I can tell, there are two big names out there who could conceivably come: Gruden and Petrino. Gruden is probably not going to come here and Petrino would be more divisive than a mid major guy. Maybe Patterson is considered a big name, but it looks like we'll lose him to Arkansas because we waited too long.

The issue I think with taking an "up and comer" is the need to immediately recoup the buyout money in revenue for 2013. That means a coach that will sell tickets to the Orange and White game, more merchandise, sell out those Austin Peay and Western Kentucky games to start the season, etc. If we take a Dykes and he is successful then it works out in the end but I think there are some more immediate concerns that the athletic department wants to address.

Yeah, but who is going to immediately sell out those games and generate big money and buzz other than Gruden?

I think the powers-that-be need to realize there's no quick fix here. It's better to have someone who is actually building something and should be able to beat our big rivals in coming years (look at what Sumlin has done in his first year at A&M), so that you hold fans' interest from year to year. Then you should easily be able to recoup your money. But, without Gruden, I don't think there's any way you can expect to suddenly make up for all the stupid contracts and buyouts immediately.

I agree totally that Gruden is the only name recognizable enough to immediately accomplish that, it's just a matter of finding someone close enough to that so fans won't have to think too hard to convince themselves we're going the right direction.

Tennessee job should never be considered a rung on the ladder. It should be the top of the ladder and none of the up and coming coaches climbing the ladder have reached the top.

Kevin Sumlin had not reached the top until a couple of days ago, but I'll bet Texas A&M is glad they hired him when they did.

I don't think having a 17-20 is going up the ladder......

Sure it was. Te coach...recruiting coordinator ...then coach at la tech and ad. Then he got the Ut job. He was climbing just fine when he got this job. Problem was, tennessee gave him a shot when he was on the 8 th rung and jumped him up to the top rung. Now he falling faster then Baumgartner to earth after he has fallen.

Take a look at Sumlin's body of work prior to A&M. While he had not reached the top, he was very close and the coaches he worked for are considered some of the finest in the business. The up and comers mentioned in most of these threads are on the Dooley level of rung climbing.

Sumlin would have made WAY more sense as the TN hire instead of Dooley then or Taggart or some of the others now. JMHO.

Well, of course Sumlin would have made more sense than Dooley. And yeah, Taggart has not done as much.

But if you consider Sumlin's resume prior to Texas A&M as being at the top of the ladder, then check out Butch Jones' or Sonny Dykes' resume. They are just as good.

What are you talking about? No one wanted to hire Dooley when we hired him. He was coming off a 4-8 season in the WAC. In 3 years at La Tech, he had a 17-20 record. The guy before him had a 16-20 record in his last 3 seasons. That guy got FIRED. Dooley was closer to being fired than he was to signing with a bigger school. He wasn't climbing any ladder.

Can you imagine the mattress burnings that would occur on campus if Tennessee went out and hired La. Tech's coach??

You see, this is what I don't understand about UT fans. Mattresses should have been burning when Dooley was hired, but they weren't. Heck, the whole campus should have been on fire when it was announced that we just hired a WAC coach coming off a 4-8 season. But everyone just wanted to bury their head in the sand. I was livid, but every vol fan I talked to was like "you never know, he could work out". It was ridiculous the amount of faith vol fans put in such a proven loser. But now, La Tech actually has a good coach who is winning there and he's got a great overall resume, a proven history of success and people are like, "We can't hire another guy from La Tech." Why the f#@% not? Would Alabama pass on Nick Saban because Curley Hollman also coached at LSU and he sucked?

It was insanity to hire Dooley, not because he came from La Tech, but because he couldn't win as a head coach. But often, some of the best guys come out of the mid majors. Why ignore such a major source of coaching talent, simply because Hamilton hired a proven loser? It makes no sense. Do UT fans still not understand the importance of W/L records when it comes to evaluating coaching talent? I'm beginning to think our fanbase is mentally handicapped.
