I know he's running against Charlie Taylor in Western North Carolina. Anyone seen any polls or know what his odds are in that race?

I wish Shuler was running to replace Elizabeth Doles cranky, old, super-convervative bones.

His main issue is the CAFTA Bill that Charlie Taylor changed his mind after some serious White House pressure. I think it came down to him not voting which helped the pro-CAFTA side. With there being a lot of textile or other types of mills and factories in this area as the main, in some cases ONLY, source of employment, Shuler's pushing this as his main point to defeat Taylor.

This issue is not really a Dem or GOP issue since both sides pushed CAFTA. Taylor and Robin Hayes were the ones who pretty much gave CAFTA the thumbs up.

So where does Shuler stand on gay rights, gay marriage, partial birth abortion? These are issues that demos are pushing even some conservative ones. That is all I am saying. I hope I have not insited anyone since this a sports board.

Gay rights, he said, "I just throw up my left arm vertically."
Gay Marriage? Heath says "I'm troubled by all the gay weddings that have been going on in San Francisco. but I am more troubled by Bert and Ernie's relationship on 'Sesame Street.
Partial abortion? "Sometimes yo have to break a few shells to have scrambled eggs.

Without turning this into a political discussion . . . How viable a candidate is Heath Shuler? I haven't heard him speak in years, but I never was really all that impressed with him. That's not to say he wasn't an outstanding ctizen, but I never thought to myself "There's a future congressman."

Well I know the locals are not thrilled with Taylor after this CAFTA issue. What few factory jobs that are left could now go South for the Winter.

As far as Shuler himself I know he and Benji have the big real estate operation in the area which between that and UT football he already has high name ID. I haven't seen any polls but as mad as the locals are over an issue like their jobs and Shuler focusing on that issue he could stand a chance to win.

That's sort of the point I was trying to make . . . as respectfully and tactfully as possible.

Shows there is no intelligence requirement to be a politician.  Remember, Shuler scored only a 16 on the Wonderlic.

Wow, Dan Marino only scored a 14. Tee Martin scored an 11.

Marino's score was definitely a little surprising, but overall I didn't see too many other surprises. From what I remember reading, the average score is around 20 or 21.

Probably a lot better than we might think, but it does go to show what determination and a big personality will do for you.

Anyone who shoots himself up with steroids to become the largest, most muscular human being novelty in the world, that gets paid to play Hercules instead of going on tour with Barnum and Bailey, who happens to marry into a rich family, who happens to have alot of influence in politics, who happens to run for Govenor in a place where Gary Coleman also ran, doesn't have to be a smart man.

Of course there was a lot of sarcasm in that. :p

Always pull for ex-Vols, but would think it would be difficult to un-seat an incumbent since he left his home state to attend a rivals state school
