Former University of Tennessee quarterback Heath Shuler is running for Congress from North Carolina.

Shuler is running as a Democrat against incumbent Republican Congressman Charles Taylor of Brevard, North Carolina.

Shuler runs a successful real estate business in Knoxville, while maintaining a residence in Waynesville. He filed papers today with the Federal Election Commission, clearing the way for him to run next year in the Eleventh Congressional District of North Carolina.

In 2001, The Tennessee Republican Party tried to recruit Shuler to run in the Fourth District after the incumbent, Van Hilleary, got into the governor's race. That same year, Shuler agreed to host a fundraiser for Hilleary but the event was canceled because it was scheduled for shortly after the 2001 terrorist attacks.

Shuler never got into the race and the seat was won by Democrat Lincoln Davis in 2002.

Hmmm. . . .didn't realize he was from Waynesville. Coincidence that Crompton is from right next door?

Good luck to Heath, even though he is a Democrat, I guess. Wonder how he made the jump from the TN Republican party to the NC Democratic?

Didn't you know abnout the connection between Jon and Heath?

Jon has worked on Heath's farm, and it was Heath that got Jon access to Tennessee's playbook in advance, which is why he has such a better grasp on it than most freshmen, (and probably Ainge).

I did not know that, but it sure explains a few things. Do you have a link to an article, etc? Thanks for the info!

Geez! Sorry, he won't make it running as a Demo. Have nothing against him--just thought he'd be smarter.

It's not that I agree or disagree, it's just the idea of calling somebody stupid for their political affiliation.

We've had this discussion before about Shuler. I think people are just a little surprised that he would be a Democrat. He doesn't quite fit the mold.

I agree that he doesn't fit the mold, and I think the voters over there will see that. The I company I work for is in dealings right now with Heath for a log home community and personally I think he his a great person, but I think he is just trying to stick his nose in which ever will best help him win. Just so happens this year it appears to be Demo, but in the long run I think it will hurt his political future that it appears he is trying to start.

No wonder American politics are so messed up. It seems people will only vote for somebody based on their party. We should start voting for people based on their merits, not whether they have a D or an R next to their name. :twocents:

Not trying to start anything at all here, but in my opinion, no decent person is one or the other. I've got some things I'm conservative about, I've got some things I'm liberal about. In elections, chances are, you're not going to agree with one or the other on every single issue. It's all about picking the lesser of two evils.
