Little help? From start to finish, are there any Volunteers who will help me learn to use pics? I am finding this to be a maze of downloads and dead ends, so I am asking for people to work this problem with me. Please do not assume that I know what you know, because I don't. If there is one person in Vol Nation who will help me do this, you will be greatly appreciated.

not sure I understand what you're asking. What do you want to do with the pics?

I'd like to use them as email attachments. I'm asking everything, start to finish. With Windows Vista Home Basic, how do I create a folder and open it to transfer the pics from my Cannon camera. I just downloaded Windows Photo Gallery. Before doing that, I installed Cannon utilities and used it to transfer the pics, but they were not saved. So I thought the Home Basic lacked the resources and downloaded photo gallery, even though there is a gallery on the os. It seems that everybody in the world can do this except me, but there is not one person in the world who can tell me how to do it.

you don't need anything special to save pics and email them. You'll just need to figure out where they are located and create a folder on your hard drive to save them.

Can you pull the SD card out of the camera? Sometimes that's easier than trying to connect via cable to your computer

I had no problem connecting my camera to the computer. That is the one thing I can do. I also created a folder for them. I saw no place to click a save icon.

that wasn't really what I was getting at. Sometimes when connecting that way things act a little weird. If that's the way you want to do it then that's fine. Just always found the SD card easier to work with

when the camera is connected do you see it as a drive? For this you go to 'My Computer' or just 'Computer'. Not sure what Vista calls it but it will be similar

I don't recall that. I had the Cannon Utilities program opened and used it. All the pics transferred. I did this long ago with XP, no problem. I did this with 7, no problem. But when I did this with Vista HB, all the pics transferred but did not save. Also, I need to know how to select the type of server my email uses. Everybody has to do this, but I cannot find one any place to get that information.

I am going to get the camera out and hook it up, since you are helping now.

I'm muddling through this. The pics are transferred and supposedly in a new folder, but I think they won't be there again.

IMO, Canon's pic transfer utilities suck. I just take my SD card out of the camera, pop it into my card reader on my PC and use the built in Windows functionality to save the pictures.

pretty much where I was going. SD card is just easier IMO plus I never can find a cord to connect things

Okay. I just found a card reader to plug into the USB if I need to do this again.

I have an open folder with the pics. Now I need to use a few as email attachments. My free aol does not show an attachment icon.

I think the pic must be reduced form 2048x1536. Don't know how to reduce it for an attachment.

If you right click on the picture and choose "Open with", do you have the option to use Microsoft Office Picture Manager?

I am familiar with resizing pictures with that. If not, what options do you have?

I have no idea on AOL mail but there is usually a paperclip, insert file, attach file or something like that

the file size would be more important than the pic size. Unless they are huge files that shouldn't make a difference (unless you start to attach many)

In the Windows photo Gallery, I clicked the email icon on the top menu and reduced the size. An email window appears. After I enter an address and click send, this is the error message I am seeing. I tried two addresses, including my own.

The host 'SMTP' could not be found. Please verify that you have entered the server name correctly.
Subject 'subject', Account: 'POP3', Server: 'SMTP', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 11001, Error Number: 0x800CCC0D

Log in to your AOL email, open a new email, click attach, navigate to where the pic is and attach it there

Just wanted to give props to pj and vader for providing this assistance. A very "modly" thing to do that is often under appreciated.

That is all.

My aol used to have an attach icon. I do not see one now. Maybe they canceled that when they stopped charging for the service. I just do not see an attach icon.

Correction. I see it now. What exactly do I do after I open it?

this is the kind of tech support you receive with your VN membership fee. Well worth the price IMO

click it, click Browse and then find where your pic is located. Double-click that and it should attach (or one-click then hit enter)

:)

Tech support is awesome, but other benefits still lacking imo. I'm still waiting on Freak to start offering frequent flyers miles per each post made!
