Henry Clay's "American System," devised in the burst of nationalism that followed the War of 1812, remains one of the most historically significant examples of a government-sponsored program to harmonize and balance the nation's agriculture, commerce, and industry."

Henry Clay was an idiot. He was a Federalist a la Alexander Hamilton, and they pushed for a very strong central government. Their movement was soundly defeated for decades, which is why they re-branded I believe more than once (Whigs). They were totally defeated, until Lincoln was elected under the guise of the Republican party. He was a Whig in Republican clothing and America forgot all about their anti-federalism because of the Civil War.
