Butch cannot tell the honest, brutal truth during weekly press conferences or any other time. He is counting on this current roster to sell new recruits on UT's positives and to steer through this particularly tough time.

It's a similar predicament that Coach Majors faced when taking the reins from a squad devoid of sec talent after the Battle tenure. New coaches can do their best to coach up the players they adopt on their arrival, but they have to work with what they have until their own recruiting begins to change the landscape.

No coach or set of coaches would come in and berate the players he is now responsible for inspiring. The very best Butch can do now is to hopefully encourage and inspire them to achieve beyond their ability. I understand what he's striving to do and it isn't easy I'd bet you.

Hold on just one second good sir! You are not nearly angry enough to post here today.

JK good post. I agree and can't wait to see what he puts together in the coming years!

So, I missed it I guess......what can't he say?

That Josh Smith has brick hands, O-line is overrated, defense has low football IQ and/or is slow, etc.

OP is right, Jones looks like an idiot if he gets on TV and says "we're just not very good" which is what Dooley said many times IIRC. Jones is responsible for these players, so he has to get everything out of them that he can - which sadly may not be much.

I honestly believe the defense will improve in year 2 we will be fast next year on D. Secondly Josh Smith IDK what's that guy's issue. I mean everyone was raving about him in practice. Everyone was saying he was the best overall receiver. I know he's a freshman but learning how to catch isn't an advanced subject hopefully he get's better.

Maybe we need to get settled on one q.b. I am sure that Worley throws differently than Peterman and Peterman throws differently than Dobbs. Maybe once he gets accustomed to one q.b., it will make a difference.

They may need to take some heat off the ball, but I really doubt that's the issue. JMO. It just doesn't seem likely that they're ALL throwing laser beams, and I'm pretty sure I've seen a few drops that were lobbed out there for sure.

He can't say he inherited a pretty lousy, undisciplined, and broken team. He can't say that the very best he can do for the time being is keep them together and begin the process of teaching them the right techniques and habits, but can't possibly coach them to perform on the field beyond their athletic capabilities. I might want you to perform a 5 foot vertical leap, but I couldn't make you athletic enough to ever actually do it.

I don't want a coach that chucks players under the bus anyway. I'm glad he is protecting and encouraging them. They need that a hell of a lot more than they need to be made the scapegoat for years of neglect in the program.

Catching a football is catching a football. Let's not baby this kid. He needs to make these plays at this level. Not writing him off, but he needs to play better.

Yeah but that only comes into play when we are talking about timing, where/when the QB is going to throw, and where the WR likes the ball. Not when catching the ball and it's in your hands. The fundamentals of catching doesn't change.

"Our fanbase is delusional and most have very little understanding of the game of football, although they are quite certain they could coach much better than my staff. With that said, we need them to pay the bills so bring it on."

He can't say that what people see on the field is actually Derek Dooley's final gift to us.

i believe what dooley said was "jesus we're a bad team" after we lost to Kentucky with a WR playing QB

Josh Smith is like many young receivers. He needs to see the ball all the way into his hands. Make the catch and then go for the extra yardage. But it is so tempting to sneak a peak!!!!!

So, you're calling Butch a liar, and Dooley an honest man?

When the quarterbacks are bad, everyone blames the receivers and now the receivers are bad and the quarterback gets the blame.

I guess he also can't say "We didn't coach very well. In fact, we were outcoached and didn't have our players ready."

That would be justified under the same logic as the OP's idea that he can't blame the players, right?

He could say that this is year zero, the team is terrible, and they don't shower well, but I think he's more worried about fixing the real problems.

I have to admit that I was not aware that Dooley was as bad as he was until I started paying attention. He was just horrible. CBJ is a breath of fresh air.
