Here's what Butch can't say

I honestly believe the defense will improve in year 2 we will be fast next year on D. Secondly Josh Smith IDK what's that guy's issue. I mean everyone was raving about him in practice. Everyone was saying he was the best overall receiver. I know he's a freshman but learning how to catch isn't an advanced subject hopefully he get's better.

Compared to last year the defense has improved alot. Besides a few games against Oregon, Alabama, and Missouri that is.

Butch cannot tell the honest, brutal truth during weekly press conferences or any other time. He is counting on this current roster to sell new recruits on UT's positives and to steer through this particularly tough time.

It's a similar predicament that Coach Majors faced when taking the reins from a squad devoid of sec talent after the Battle tenure. New coaches can do their best to coach up the players they adopt on their arrival, but they have to work with what they have until their own recruiting begins to change the landscape.

No coach or set of coaches would come in and berate the players he is now responsible for inspiring. The very best Butch can do now is to hopefully encourage and inspire them to achieve beyond their ability. I understand what he's striving to do and it isn't easy I'd bet you.

Well put, well thought out and articulate point of view. You must not be from around here!

2 gold stars!!

What butch can't say is...... Vol fans are generally unrealistic and VN has way too many 13-23 yr olds on it.

So true. My brother and I have discussed this at length. Take qb for example... He can't say I don't have the personell to run my system. Which is the truth. We don't have the right type of offensive line personell either. Usually spread teams like slightly smaller more athletic offensive lineman. He just has to go out there and be positive and get them most out of what he's got. More than anything, Imo, he's inherited a team that doesn't have a winning mentality. It's going to take time but I believe we're doing the right things.

Ok but he has talent to work with. Our players had offers from multiple BCS schools including Cincinnati. It will get better with his recruits as any new head coach but don't act like we are damn MAC school.

Our level is very close to a MAC team, but times they are a changing.

Actually Butch stated that he understands the fanbase wanting it now. He also said he wants it now but realizes it going to take time. To express his disappointment in the teams performance against Mizzou tells me he gets it. We should have been blown out of the water the way we were. As he put it, "it's unacceptable". I'm ok with him keeping it real and being unsatisfied without throwing them under the bus.

As to us not being a MAC team...That's true.

Thanks to CDD much of our team talent really is only MAC level talent and speed.

bUTch is working on changing that as fast as he can too.

#BrickbyBrick...VFL...GBO!!!

"Our fanbase is delusional and most have very little understanding of the game of football, although they are quite certain they could coach much better than my staff. With that said, we need them to pay the bills so bring it on."
I understand the scoreboard.

That Josh Smith has brick hands, O-line is overrated, defense has low football IQ and/or is slow, etc.

OP is right, Jones looks like an idiot if he gets on TV and says "we're just not very good" which is what Dooley said many times IIRC. Jones is responsible for these players, so he has to get everything out of them that he can - which sadly may not be much.

I was hoping you would mention this...that was by far the worst thing about Dooley...the way he constantly threw players under the bus. And it wasn't even as true as he tried to make it. Hell, we were more talented then than we are now.

Better days are coming if Butch can just keep recruiting like this. He has done a phenomenal job so far.

Don't think it is pressure. I think is experience and the freshmen are gaining in experience. Next year, we will also be playing a lot of freshmen and we will have to realize the experience factor take time.

Explain why your offensive line is overrated? Certainly not in ability. Before the Bama game, Saban said it was probably the best overall O line we would face this season. Let that settle in for a moment? If you want to watch tennessee players in this year's NFL draft, you had better get there early with Richardson and James.

Give thought to the barn? They don't have tennessee's O-line and they have essentially carved out an 8 and 1 record running the ball down people's throat. They won't dazzle you in the air, but they will hammer the rock with undersize backs, Tre Mason and Corey Grant and QB, Nick Marshall.

The next time tennessee fans see this much O-line talent and experience at the same time, will not be anytime in the immediate future.

"A very thin team in terms of depth, Jones said that in order for Tennessee to compete with the best of the best the scout teams have to be more of a challenge."

I thought this was interesting. Most of us think of our talent and depth issues in terms of not having good enough starters, quick enough starters, or talented depth rotating in. Here's another thing that doesn't get thrown out there...our scout team!

In sports they say, you get better by playing against better competition. Like the increase competition forces you to up your game. I personally have noticed that in myself. I bet you part of the reason Bama and Oregon and LSU, etc have been so good for so long also has to do with the talent in who they're practicing against in every day during the season.

People think they're over-rated because they don't run block well or get to the 2nd level.
