Did you check out the prospects georgia brought in for yesterday's game? There were about 20, maybe more. I think every one of them was a four star, with maybe one or two 5 stars--and I think every one of them with the exception of one, maybe two, was from georgia! They had one prospect from florida, but that might have been it. So nearly 20 4 stars from their own state. Florida of course is the same. This is our recruiting challenge every year--having to pull lots of guys from out of state, which we well know. It's why we really need one of the best recruiting coaches and staffs in the nation. And, Jones, to his credit, is a good recruiter.

Yes. We know. This is the way it has been for decades.

in this victory. Lots of talent in Atlanta alone, but TN is producing the most talent since I have been watching football (the late 60's).

All the more reason to respect CBJ's ability to find those diamonds in the rough and develop 3* to 5*s......not sure the point of this post......but ok, tells us something we don't already know. UT has always struggled pulling those players out of any state, but Jones has done a great job of getting enough to put together gritty, chip on their shoulder and they posses the ability to think as well........I am ok with were we are on recruiting. By the way, what do you think went through those recruits minds when JJ brought that pass down?

Yeah it's tough.. What's made it tougher is the emergence of Clemson, South Carolina and North Carolina to some degree. We used to get our pick of litter in the Carolina's, we don't anymore. Kippy Brown said we were a scavenger program and to some degree we still are. Winning these type of games and the exposure it brings only helps.. Not worried.. We're going to get ours like we always do..

I've been watching Vol Football since 1965 and I had no idea we were in this position. I'm gonna have to start paying attention to stuff like this. Someone needs to let our staff know that Georgia has talent. I bet we could pull some recruits from Georgia since 25 is the limit each year. Georgia can't get them all.

I agree Georgia is a hot bed for recruiting but or inability to land in state talent is concerning. We really need a good late push. This cycle has been painful

But, we had just as many if not more of those same recruits at our victory over UF. Yes, this will always be the challenge every season to get the best recruits we must compete against the best other SEC schools to try & gain the best recruits. When Fulmer was here & doing good we were able to pull some of those recruits in.

After he left, things went downhill with recruiting. Now we do have a coach & a recruiter all in one. CBJ is getting us there. We have a lot of talent on this team but moving forward especially for the 2017 signing class he has work cut out for him. He's looking at having to drop current commits & grab a couple 5* guys at least just to get us into the top 10 class for 2017.

I think he can do it because he's done it before. We get Trey Smith, Cam Akers, & Lamont Wade then that's gonna be the right step in the direction of a top 10 class for 2017. Maybe we can end up with Holloman as well. Gibbs I'm not so sure about because I've always thought he was staying with UGA.

It is a challenge for the coaching staff though in recruiting. You're right about that. Ever since 2001 up until CBJ got here we really wasn't much of a factor in recruiting in the SEC. Just a spotty 5* here & there. It's not like that anymore. The bigger named recruits are willing to come to Knoxville now. Thanks!

Just like winning seasons, recruiting runs in cycles. One school gets a hot new coach and all the HS kids want to go there....as in Urban Myers. He gets a name and a few nattys, and he stays a hot commodity, as in Nick Saban. This makes me wonder what LSU will do with their next hire.
Fulmer got bit by the "new guy in town" syndrome, and got somewhat lazy in recruiting. Butch is a good recruiter, not a great recruiter. He is or his staff is, a good talent evaluator ant that has kept him in the recruiting game.........IMO.

I think Butch & his entire recruiting staff are great recruiters. The only real problem I have with him & his staff since he got here is with in-state talent. Just too many 5* & 4* recruits going elsewhere to play.

That shouldn't happen. We must start keeping most(80%+) in-state top recruits in Knoxville & not allow them to go off to Clemson & other out of state schools.

Pulling Smith, Akers and Wade is a long shot. A big time long shot. I think its goint to take a playoff appearence by the Vols to have a shot at those guys. I think Smith is all Vol unless something catastrophic happens. I think we have about a 75% chance at Wade. Continued wins will help immensely imo. Pitts schedule doesnt really line up well for them to get more than say 6 wins. Penn states either.

Akers is going to be a really tough pull. I think there is a chance we can get him but it seems small.

I thought after the UF game we could get a commitment. When we didnt that was cool. But after beating Georgia, I really figured we would have someone commit. I know the game just happened but schools like Michigan and Alabama just got huge commitments.

Georgia may have tons of in-state talent, but they go out of state to recruit too. Just look at their 5 star QB they got from Washington

I'm pleased with getting high level 3 star guys and coaching them up, but would love to see more 4 and 5 star guys who can step in and contribute right away and then fill in around them

The staff has done a good job bringing in top 10 classes despite our poor records in the past decade. Now with the big wins and momentum hopefully they can reach out and grab some even higher rated recruits and key positions of need (OL and LB come to mind)

13(?) out of 22 starters are from Tennessee so it is not like we can't build a solid base from in state. Tennessee is not Georgia or Florida but it is above average and getting better every year.

I said this in another thread awhile back, but in state recruiting is about to pick up big time in the '18 & '19 classes. Top prospects want to go to the schools that were hot when they were freshmen and sophomores. We won 9 last year and should win 10+ this year. We are finally relevant again in the college football landscape. When you can no longer sell new coach or early playing time, you have to be able to sell success. We are reaching that point again. This is why I don't get all the Butch Jones hate. He has been rebuilding the program the right way for continued, long lasting success.

Tennessee has never been, and never will be irrelevant. However, national rankings do come and go over the years.

What we consider relevant and what high school kids consider relevant are two totally different animals.
