“The kid is a worker, first and foremost,” Tennessee defensive coordinator Tim Banks said Friday. “He has a tremendous amount of confidence, he believes in himself, and he believes in what we are teaching. I love this kid; he is going to play a ton for us. The steps and the growth that he has shown coming from spring to our fall camp have been tremendous.”

Carter’s rise to SEC contributor as a freshman has been meteoric. At this time a year ago, the Smyrna native was a three-star recruit committed to Memphis.

The annals of college football are littered with pre-season hype that didn't pan out, but I'll go ahead and say I like it and that he will prove to be one of our best LBs ever.

I’m always a little skeptical of spring and preseason hype, seems like there’s someone every season that gets a lot of hype, then disappears.

We’ve seen a lot of frosh hyped in the preseason only to never crack the lineup and transfer elsewhere. That being said, this guy sure seems like the real deal. Excited to see what he can do, when he gets the chance.

Or suffers a season-ending injury before the season even begins.

Why would you even make that statement? It does take a special person to make a statement about injury in a post about a player being hyped to get a lot of playing time. I mean seriously, there is still enough residual BVS for some to curl back into a fetal position.

I'm seeing symptoms of BVS, aka Battered Vols Syndrome. Take two undefeated seasons and see your doctor if symptoms return.

GO VOLS!!!!

Should we be concerned with the recent push for this player? I am all for him becoming the hype that is surrounding, but should we kinda wait and see?

Is this another Wilks or Bain situation in the making? VolNation has a way of sometimes pre-crowning someone to greatest

This came from Coach Banks, not Volnation. Everything we’ve heard since the spring is that this kid can play and from reports it seems that he’s been getting better and better. Every now a then a freshman comes along that isn’t typical and he seems like one of them. Doesn’t strike me as a Bain/Wilks situation. Those threads weren’t really serious.

It's nice to finally have depth at the LB position.

Keeping play-making dudes fresh there will be nice finally

not that the previous bunch weren't real play-makers
