Heupel in 2018

We’d have been better off hiring Mizzou’s OC of two seasons…just wasn’t happening. Starting his HC career at UCF and letting him streamline his process made him a better CEO faster tho…imo. White paved the way at both stops and it would be interesting to see how Fulmer would have taken to his non-traditional offense. How much interference would old Phil have run and how short a hook would he have brandished?

Good point I guess it all comes down to the right timing because like you said would Fulmer been a distraction or a help. When you trace it back the same thing happened at Bama they had to start with the right AD before they was able to get Saban right place right time.

2018 was the year that Josh Heupel was hired at UCF and knowing now what we have come to understand would we have been better off to have hired Heupel in 2018 as a unproven coach and gave him the time to build it right?

Coach Klein of the South Central Louisiana State University Mud Dogs woulda been a better choice in 2018.

Come to think of it Mama Boucher woulda been a better choice.

The list could go on and on.

You can hire the greatest coach in the world, but the coach will not be successful if the Athletics Department is dysfunctional (or NFL office).
We don't get Danny White as AD if we hired Heupel in 2018.
...Or Fulmer meddled w/ JH and he gone ...either way, I don't think it would have worked for the good of UT long term.

Timing worked out the only way it could. We had to have the Pruitt/Fulmer disaster in order to finally clean house on the Hill. Not just our football program, but the entire Athletic Department is in much better shape today largely because the Pruitt debacle made it impossible to continue simply tweaking the old power structure and hoping for a different result. There is no AD White if there hadn’t been AD Fulmer

Distraction, or disaster? Best thing to happen was Fulmer canned, White & Heupel hired. White has improved the entire athletic dept it looks to me. Finally, we have a great program continuing to rise. Heupel's uptempo offense is wonderful compared to the grind it out conservative offenses of the past. Reminds me of Spurrier's "let it fly" philosophy which torched teams all game long. Big risk, big reward, but mixing the right plays made it work. Not that I'm a Spurrier fan, because I'm not, but I do give him credit for what he did at UF. He sure had Phil's number & got into his head. OL.

Patton quoting Frederick the Great understood it well….

With even numbers and no eventuating circumstances like terrain, offense always has the inherent advantage of initiative. Defense is reactive by nature. For a competent leader not afraid to take risks, audacity in the attack is the way to go.

No. He needed the time to learn the art of being a head coach. See Tony Elliott.

Feels like blasphemy now but hiring Saban in 2007 would have been the right move over Kiffin in 2008.

Hindsight is almost always 20/20.

Very good point. Danny is the man!

He needed to get his feet wet first. Even though, he did take UCF on another undefeated season his first year. Until they played LSU without their starting QB. Thats the game that Woke Joe Burrow up.

We wouldn’t have had Danny White. So I don’t think it would have been a good hire at the time. I still think Fulmer could have done better than Pruitt. I don’t think he did a thorough coaching search.

Not sure fans wanted to let UT be his first HC job.

Sadly to say as the years went by it seems that Fulmer became more a curse than a legend to Tennessee Football. I know he won a national title but in the end he was able to do more damage than he did good.
