Last year I got mocked a good deal for making a list of guys who we could finish with who could take us to number 1.

A number 1 recruiting class is absolutely not a possibility. I think we could end up inside the top 10, around where we were last year. That would be an amazing accomplishment for this staff.

Lots of our top commits do not care about their rivals ranking. They are coming to Knoxville and they want to make plays for the Vols and get to the NFL. They are not still making highlight reels every Friday and sending tapes off to recruiting services. Getting a committable offer was what they were looking for, and it happened.

Some of our guys, like Michael Taylor last year, have the ability to shoot up rankings. The UA and Army AA game invitations have not all been set at this point. If a guy has an awesome season and ends up playing in one of those games, his stock may shoot up after he performs in practice against other top talent.

If we finish with

1. DeAnthony Arnett WR
Saginaw, Michigan Saginaw
6'0" 167
4 stars 5.9

2. Gabriel Wright DT
Columbus, Georgia Carver
6'3" 273
4 stars 5.8

3. Isaiah Crowell RB
Columbus, Georgia Carver
5'11" 190
4 stars 6.0

4. Antonio Richardson OL
Nashville, Tennessee Ensworth
6'6" 310
5.1 4 stars 5.9

5. Eddrick Loften DB (last years profile, hope he makes the grades to be a part of the class)
Irving, Texas Nimitz
5'10" 195
4.5 4 stars 5.8

6. Terry Bell DT
Lakeland, Florida Tenoroc
6'5" 270
3 stars 5.7

7. Anthony Chickillo DE
Tampa, Florida Alonso
6'3" 226
4.8 4 stars 5.8
Chuck Smith would have to get him to switch from Miami on an OV which is hard but not impossible.

8. Cameron Clear OL
Memphis, Tennessee Central
6'6" 265
4 stars 5.8

9. Gionni Paul LB
Lakeland, Florida Kathleen
6'0" 210
3 stars 5.7

10. Jay Rome TE
Valdosta, Georgia Valdosta
6'5" 255
4 stars 5.9

We could get 7 4 stars out of the 10 spots we have left.

The other slot could go to
Mickey Johnson DT
Covington, Louisiana St. Paul's
6'1" 310
5.0 4 stars 5.8

I personally think that the Carver teammates pull is not that crazy at all. The finish I am talking about is not a projection, it is pretty much all our top targets saying yes. It does illustrate the absurdity of people acting like this staff is focused soley on 3 star character guys.
Committed

Out of these, I will project 3 get a 4th star by the end of the year. Jmoore had good projections as to who, but overall it is easiest for Rivals guys to move a 5.7 to a 5.8 Newberg is gone, but they can still see gaudy numbers and they will also have some guys who fall off due to injury or academics (how can this impact? because though they say that offer lists do not matter, if a guy has to go juco it will hurt who is recruiting him and his buzz).

11. Allan Carson DT
Oxford, AL Oxford
6'0" 327
5.3 3 stars 5.5

12. Justin Coleman DB
Brunswick, GA Brunswick
5'11" 175
4.4 3 stars 5.7

Could be 4 star

13. Mack Crowder OL
Bristol, TN Tennessee
6'4" 270
5.2 3 stars 5.6

Should be 4 star. Will start as a freshman.

14. Vincent Dallas ATH
Ellenwood, GA Cedar Grove
6'0" 180
3 stars 5.7

Should be 4 star

15. Brendan Downs TE
Bristol, TN Tennessee
6'6" 224
4.7 3 stars 5.6

16. Christian Harris LB
Woodstock, GA Etowah High School
6'2" 230
3 stars 5.5

17. A.J. Johnson LB
Gainesville, GA Gainesville
6'3" 226
4.7 4 stars 5.8

18. Kyler Kerbyson OL
Knoxville, TN Catholic
6'5" 290
3 stars 5.7

Could be a 4 star

19. Pat Martin DB
Greenville, SC J. L. Mann
5'11" 196
4.6 4 stars 5.8

20. Alan Posey OL
Athens, GA Clarke Central
6'6" 305
5.2 3 stars 5.7

21. Andrew Power TE
Yuma, AZ Arizona Western C.C.
6'5" 262
4.7 3 stars 5.6

22. Brian Randolph DB
Marietta, GA Kell
6'0" 180
4.5 3 stars 5.6

Could be a 4 star

23. Trevarris Saulsberry DT
Gainesville, FL Gainesville
6'4" 252
3 stars 5.6

24. Tom Smith RB
Apopka, FL Apopka
5'10" 205
4.5 3 stars 5.6

Could be a 4 star

25. Tino Thomas ATH
Memphis, TN Melrose
6'0" 190
3 stars 5.6

26. Jordan Williams DE
Gainesville, FL Gainesville
6'4" 240
3 stars 5.6

Could be a 4 star

27. Justin Worley QB
Rock Hill, SC Northwestern
6'4" 196
4.8 3 stars 5.5

Could be a 4 star

28. Devrin Young RB
Knoxville, TN Bearden
5'7" 156
4.5 3 stars 5.5

5 4 stars in the committed group of 18, plus up to 7 more? Even if we ended up with 10 4 stars in a class of 28, we would end up around 9 or 10.

A class rank of 15 is more likely, but considering how heavily we are focusing on linemen and that we are getting a QB who many feel is even more underrated than Tyler Bray was, I am happy with the effort this staff is putting in.

We need to have top 10 classes to compete.....I'll be happy with top 15 this year

If we finished with this class everyone would be ecstatic. But we won't get all those guys.

We need Wright, Johnson, Couch at DT, plus Grooms and Orta (or two of the other four star skilled position players also said to be interested), Rome (TE), Richardson (OT), Dawson at LB but Paul will do, and Crowell. That's nine. If there winds up being room for ten, add the best available and interested prospect, whatever the position. Add Clear as a wildcard at TE, OT, or maybe even DT.

So you expect us to get our top 7 targets? I don't care if Nick Saban was recruiting for us, that's a big reach.

Crowell is a pipe dream IMO. All the others you listed are possible but the likelyhood of landing them all isn't good. We've probably got four or five guys who could get a fourth star but most likely two or three at most will get a bump. Kerbyson, Randolph, Posey, Coleman, and Smith are the guys who I think have a shot at a bump in ranking.

We actually already have four four star players in one or more of the rankings A. J. Johnson, Kerbyson, Martin, and Posey. All three rankings dis interior offensive linemean, awarding very few four star ratings to them, so Crowder is a top recruit when you look beyond the hype on scores of four star skilled players.

I can see a couple of others landing at four stars too. Worley is doing nothing but breaking Carolina passing records, but his release will need to be quicker and his skills in the pocket much sharper at the major college level. Bray went to every quarterback camp out there between his junior and senior year. His skills were much better honed at this point.

I think we could get as high 12.

I expect 13-17.

In your opinion, do we finish with most of the guys CDD actually wants? Or do we settle with the guys he believes we get? I don't care about the stars. I figure CDD knows what we need more than just star rankings. If he ends up with the class he wants and they're all 3 stars I'm cool.

So where do you think we finish? Just curious to see how optimistic you are about this. Of course we'll target some good players, but getting them is completely different.

I think we end up with between 10 and 14 4 star guys, with Kerbyson and Dallas offer lists they should be moved up, probably Coleman, what I find crazy about being so worried about where we end up ranked is if we sign Couch and Johnson and thats bumps us to top 10 or 15 we are all thrilled but when they dont qualify like Brown, Loften and Clark last year I dont see what it really matters like USC move to number 1 last year by getting Henderson who left already for Miami.

I think that in this class we have our starting center for next year in Crowder, we have another starter in the secondary in Loften, we have 2-3 guys who will see lots of time at DT, we have our starting PR and KR and we have depth on DL and OL which we have not before.

Staff I know want top LBs who could start from day 1, but I do not think we have that at this point. I think we are recruiting good LB depth, but I do not think we have anyone like the guys we wanted at the top of the board.

Curtis Grant
Brent Calloway
Tony Steward.

We would have started those guys from Day 1. Unlike Stephone Anthony, all of them were listening at some point.

Kirby Smart getting a kid at LB when Wilcox has not been able to show what he is planning on doing is not surprising, but it SUCKs how well Clemson is able to do recruiting against us. It makes you wonder if Clemson will end up with the $ame $tain as UNC...

Just like everyone is saying wait until the 2012 season. I think we should wait until the 2012 or 2013 classes to truly see Dooley's recruiting abilities. That will give him time to be the only Tennessee coach they know and be in with them early.

Clemson has a pretty good recruiting staff. Ole Piss kind of surprises me.
