Given the success we had on offense this year and our horrible defense, there were a lot of threads debating if our offensive philosophy hurt us defensively. As I read discussions about Gundy, several people keep saying he would be a good hire if he had a good defensive coordinator. The numbers say that's not a reasonable expectation given the offensive system he runs.
Here are the top 8 offenses in the country in yards per game and their subsequent defensive ranks.
1. Baylor - 122nd Defense
2. La Tech - 123rd Defense
3. Texas A+M - 58th Defense
4. Oregon - 48th defense
5. Oklahoma State - 83rd Defense
6. Marshall - 102nd Defense
7. Arizona - 119th Defense
8. West Virginia - 110th Defense

It's all about defense in our league. Run, stop the run, and consistent special teams. We need a coach who can bring those fundamentals

Didn't Texas A&M beat Alabama

I think you have to look at more than one year to get a statistically significant answer, otherwise you'd have to conclude that Appalachian State is a better program than Michigan or whatever. What makes the SEC the SEC is that certain trends tend to play out over time. The SEC is a grind. Fulmer understood that, I think. He just quit grinding as consistently after he got his title.
