The donors play a part, specifically in helping line up money... the AD generally has a board of some sort, whether it be publicly known, or private that helps him/her make the decision and decide the best candidates. A series of interviews takes place with potential candidates, they go from there. Coaches can show interest, or usually are approached. If a coach is coaching elsewhere, typically schools ask for permission to speak with the coach. Not always though. JG is right, everyone has an agent, and they help break down the actual finances.
"Board of Trustees" and "(Insert school name here) has asked permission to speak to (insert Coach's name here)" are two phrases one frequently hears when all of this is going on
I could say something about how i wish i would hear "the University of Tennessee has asked LSU for permission to speak to their current defensive coordinator Bo Pelini about their vacancy", but i won't do that here....
I believe our dream of Pelini in orange will be dashed when that idiot Callahan is fired by Osbourne.
Pelini = Nebraska's next head coach
How does it work when a school wants to hire a new coach? Who helps in making the decision other than the AD? How do they decide the salary or the candidates? I dont know how it works, I'm sure some of you do.
VGal, I'm a bit of an expert on this subject so here is how it works at Alabama. The money men (Board Of Trustees) make all the calls from the firing, who to hire, and how much to pay him. The A.D. is just the "official" mouthpiece of the B.O.T. It probably is the same way at Tennesse but I don't know that for sure.
If the board of trustees has the final say so, what do they do if they are not in agreement? Does majority rule?
While not an "expert" like tuscaloosa... he's so good he knew the ink was dry on spurrier's contract.... i have a general knowledge.
The board would come to a collective agreement, whether it was someone they would all agree to, or have majority rule. However, if one of the major money men (ie, the biggest donor) didn't like someone, he may or may not have more leverage than someone else.
It was a stalling effort aimed at appeasing a part of the grumbling fanbase and waiting for the NFL season to end. We lowballed him by offering him LESS money than he was making at W. Virginia. It was a brilliant plan by the Board and Mal Moore.
Coach hiring check list:
1. Does the coach have a tie to legendary coach and proclivity to sexually harass staffers? Check.
2. Does coach claim dying allegiance all the while eyeballing job in other conference? (Helps if coach has woman's name and is whiny) Check.
3. Does coach come from far west, enjoy strippers and see university credit as appropriate payment for said strippers?
4. Did coach play for university and have blood relation to legendary coach? Does coach commonly look confused and exhibit blank stare in fourth quarter? Check.
5. Does coach have habit of jumping from job to job, lying and an enormous ego? Check.
Apparently, meeting any of the above criteria qualifies.
