The Vols were 21-35 from the free throw line. The easiest shot in the game. That won't cut it against good teams. Tonites game could have been won by at least 20pts, but the Gamecocks stayed close because we can't hit freaking free throws. There are about 7 more games we could have won if they could just hit 80% of their free throws. The Vols could be 23-3 and ranked in the top ten, if they could just hit some free throws, in spite of all the other problems. I'm not ready to get rid of CBP or anyone else. Make the players hit 10 in a row at practice before they can leave.

It just continue to amaze me how bad they can be at times in so many areas.

Teach them the old 2 hand squat and underhanded shot. Sneak some cheerleaders in and shoot by proxy. Get some middle school girls to sub for our super athletes at the FT line.

It's all mental. It's a set shot in a jumpshot game. They practice them plenty. I pointed out yesterday that players who think too much or think "i gotta make this" need to relax and shoot. If Cam's expressions and body language didn't show exactly what I was talking about, I don't know what does. Don't put so much pressure on yourself, relax and shoot. It's tough to do. When you start missing, it's in your head.

Exactly. Tatum right now isn't missing them because he doesn't practice enough. It's mainly because he's still stressed about the Florida game.

Also, I've noticed that our free throw shooting is really streaky in general. The last two games have been awful, but I think there were a few games where we shot over 80%. I think Fields and Pearl are the only two that have an actual problem with their shot. Williams usually has problems making them as well, but I think his are also mental.

Not sure how well they shoot fts in practice but someone asked Wes Rucker about McBee's fg shooting in practice. Rucker said that McBee shoots lights out. It just doesn't transfer to the games. I wonder if this is the same as the team's ft shooting. When the lights are on and the arenas are full, I'm sure our players feel the pressure. But I've never seen a team with more inconsistent ft shooting than the Vols. But, ft shooting across the board has been declining for years. It's a basic fundamental that has gotten lost. Hitting fts doesn't get you on SportsCenter....most of the time.

Cam Tatum sucks out loud! I have never seen a guard/wing that struggled as much to hit free throws as he does. Shaquille O'Neal laughs when Tatum shoots free throws. 1-6 from the line last night is embarassing.Something has to change!

Shooting is extremely contagious, in both directions.

Here's something I've always wondered. Guys miss free throws short or long - hardly ever left or right. So why not teach them to bang it off the backboard? It seems to me the margin of error would go way down that way.

They are what they are at this point. No use in continuing to beat a dead horse.

true statement.. but everyone wants to fire the coach bc we're 16-10. ... we'd been a hell of a lot better if could hit free throws. Charlotte, Oakland, USC, Florida x2, Arkansas... we'd be 22-6, so the op has a valid point.

Shooting free throws has to do with mechanics. If you shoot enough of them then it gets
to be second nature. This is what all the NBA free throw leaders in history have said.

Easier said than done. Shaq would shoot hundreds/day and see how far that got him. There is a mental aspect too. If you shoot 50% practice isn't going to turn you into a 80% shooter.
