I'm looking for a system for 1-2 outdoor cameras that has motion detection and night vision with a range of at least 40 ft. Preferably wireless.

Any suggestions?

GB, I have been looking into these, but gave up. Mercy sakes, you better know exactly what you want - night vision, color, wireless, monitor, phone accessible, etc... - in addition too what you already stated.

Hope someone with in depth knowledge of these systems answers. I would also like recommendations.

GB, These work well

Ha. Well it's for a rental property of mine. The tenants have one of these:

My dad spent a lot of time researching and consulting with a local electronics company. Even after all of that he's not that satisfied with the product. He got a system with analytics but it turned out not to be very smart.

Put you a couple of ISIS flags (@amazon) out front of the house and everyone will be watching your house.

I have a Samsung Smartcam HD Pro in a window looking into my front porch. It has a wide-angle lens so it captures the whole porch. It is wireless and has a built in motion sensor that will trigger recording on an SD card. The app works pretty well and will send push notifications to your phone when the motion is triggered. It isn't the most intuitive interface though.
Night vision seems to work pretty well but there are street lights they may be aiding it. I like enough to add a second in the back eventually.

They make an outdoor one too but the SD capacity wasnt as big which is the main reason I opted to put it inside looking out a window.

Not an outdoor camera, but the canary camera I have in my house works very well. You even get notifications sent to your smart phone when it senses motion. It can be placed in a window as the motion detection is very sensitive.

I've read stories about wireless cameras that are viewable via an app on your phone.

Then I read a story where someone hacked in and could view your wireless camera's view with their phone.

Therefore, I am not a fan of wireless cameras.

just a suggestion, isn't there some hunting cameras that you could use ? I have no idea if there is or not,but the Bambi killers would probably have something :)

I've seen some pretty good night shots, from some motion activated night cameras

Not a bad idea. I'd like something kind of inconspicuous/doesn't look bad affixed to the house.

He needs something where the footage can't be stolen along with the camera.

Try Lorex brand, it's not top of the line but that's not what you are looking for.
