Tweeters loyal to CHW ticked that Doris Burke and her sidekick on the telecast last night were bold enough to tell the truth! I've never been a Doris Burke fan but she has every right to tell listeners about the status of Lady Vol recruiting...or lack of recruiting. Doris let loose with some piercing statements, such as..."inconsistent effort is inexcusable in my estimation"...and..."I'm seeing a lack of competitive toughness" at times...harsh, maybe, but definitely true to anyone watching recent performances by this team. When Notre Dame was scoring almost at will on back door cuts to the rim in the 3rd quarter, Doris stated, "that's too easy"...homers aren't ready to open their eyes to reality...this team not only has trouble with any offensive consistency...they stink defending inside the paint! Doris and her colleague said that it was almost like a "layup drill" except most teams manage to miss occasionally even during layup drills...but not against this porous LV defense...was like taking candy from a baby...and this is the fifth straight game in which Notre Dame has "schooled" the Lady Vol defense on back door cuts in the paint! Pathetic!

The only time I took issue with Burke and her compatriot was when they speculated the Lady Vols' fan base might start to get a little restless. Might?? A little?? I understand how understatement can serve a purpose, but that comment MIGHT have been a LITTLE clueless.

I take issue with Doris every time she opens her mouth. She is just a mouthpiece for UConn. If it were not for the positive publicity she gives that program every time she announces in a national forum, or the subtle disses for teams not UConn, I probably would not have an issue with her. She is truly a national asset for UConn that other teams don't have and it is unfair to all the other teams who do not have that type of exposure. She definitely has an agenda. Flame on!

I am not surprised at the commentary during the game about the Tennessee program and I believe ESPN is taking the opportunity to put their thumb on the scales in hopes of creating change that will then pay dividends on their womens basketball investment. Follow me...

From a broadcasting standpoint certain teams represent ratings goldmine...NFL - Cowboys, Patriots, Steelers; MLB - Yankees, Cardinals, NBA - Lakers, Celtics, & LeBron, Mens Basketball - Duke, Kentucky, UNC, Kansas, etc. The Tennessee program has undoubtedly slipped in national prestige, but the only game that has drawn significant hype for the sport is UConn v. Tennessee. The two goliaths of the sport. The Red Sox and Yankees. ESPN needs Tennessee to be relevant again. Have you seen the womens basketball ratings over the last 5 years? Atrocious. Now I'm not suggesting Tennessee's decline is directly responsible for the ratings decline however a resurgence by Tennessee, one of the two most storied programs, to challenge UConn would be made for TV.

Now I don't believe ESPN prior to this point had a problem with Holly. In fact it looked like she was willing to play ball with them on a UConn game. But I imagined the performance of this team over the last two months has stirred worries and now in what seems like a rising crescendo of doubters has decided its time to weigh in.

Perhaps two of their of own (Carolyn Peck and Gail G) are interested....

One would have to have their head buried in the sand not to notice the obvious about this team, but the Holly crowd is beyond logic.

Much of what she said was true. Definitely agree with the "mouthpiece for UConn" comment. Reminds me of Finebaum and Bammer...:mega_shok:

GO LADYVOLS!

another "grassy knoll" believer. ESPN hates us. sure they build up UConn because they are now the best, and unfortunately have been for several years.

Please NO - as a Uconn fan I hate Doris Burke and watched last nights game with the sound of so I would not have to listen to the typical drivel that she produces. The thought of her being a mouthpiece for Uconn is too disgusting for me to contemplate. The best voice on WCBB out there is your own Kara and her interactions with our Rebecca are as good as WCBB gets.

People have this idea that ESPN is in Uconn's pocket, but they were thick in the politics of conference realignment and a driving force in a lot of it and look at how that turned out - with Uconn on the outside looking in. Must be a very big hole in that pocket!
