Any car guys around?

I've got a 2000 Honda Accord SE and unfortunately think I may have a transmission issue going on. It started back in the winter and I thought maybe it was just something that had to do with it being cold. I'm not getting any engine/maintenance lights. Sometimes I'll go from a dead stop, press on the gas and the car will feel like it's changing gears fine. Other times I press on the gas and it feels like the car jumps, I even heard it briefly screech the tires one time it happened. It only does it in the lower gears, never at speed. It doesn't seem to be consistent, rather intermittent. Any ideas on what this could be? I've got 155K on the car. I had the transmissino fluid changed a little over a year ago and no issues were spotted. Are there any instances involving transmissions problems where you DON'T have to rebuild the entire thing or buy a new/used one?

When’s the last time you had the timing belt replaced?

Speed sensors are another possible issue.
When they malfunction, they can cause a misread and choose the wrong gear or not change when they should.
Unfortunately, there are several possible causes for that issue. Start with the cheapest diy and go from there.
Fuses, sensors, timing belt etc..

Have you had the transmission serviced regularly or is this the first time you changed the fluid/filter?

I believe I had the transmission fluid changed one other time before that. What are you thinking?

I might as well put this here as well and get some input on it.

I also need brakes changed on the car. I called around Midas, Meineke, my local shop all quoted roughly the same price of around $400(all 4 pads and rotors turned) for the whole car. I then called Budget Brakes and the guy tells me $218(all 4 pads and rotor turns). I questioned him about the difference and he said they supply all their own parts and that's why they can offer that price.

I'm no expert transmission expert by any means but I've been around cars all my life. Grew up in a salvage yard, learned to drive in one.

Here's what transmission guys have told me..... If you don't service it regularly, like every 30,000 miles, once you get a lot of miles on the car you are better off not changing the fluid, just topping it off when it gets a little low. The fluid has detergent in it that breaks down the sludge. Evidently this sludge is not a bad thing for an older transmission. I just took one of my shop trucks, 180K Miles, to have the transmission service to a friend of mine that specializes in transmissions. I was under the impression that it was OK to service the transmission if you were not having issues. He wouldn't do it knowing the transmission hadn't been serviced in a while. He said it would most likely cause problems.

I usually do brake jobs myself. They are so easy now. You can do them in about 30 min per wheel. There are different quality of brake parts. You can pay as little as $20 for a set of pads for the front or rear and as much as $70. Rotors can vary too. I would not turn the rotors. They are now built with such a tight tolerance, many can't be turned anyway. Also, they typically charge $20 to turn each rotor and for many cars you can buy them for not much more than that. I would buy new or keep my old ones unless they are bad. Bad being grooved or warped. If they are warped you would feel shuttering when braking. Some of the more expensive, ceramic pads require either turning or new rotors. They need the rough surface to seat the pads. I typically do not use the ceramic pads. I found they tend to warp rotors more easily. On some of my vehicles I go the cheapest pads possible because they are easier on the rotors. Downside is you have more brake dust and not quite the lifespan as the ceramic.

If I were you, I would go to the advance or autozone or O'reilly's website and see what the parts cost for your Honda. That way you'll get an idea as to what they are charging for labor. Again, it's not hard to do it yourself if you are handy at all and takes a minimum of tools. The hardest part is jacking up the vehicle and removing the tire. I have a floor jack and a Milwaukee electric impact wrench so that's not a big deal for me.

Lee's Specialtee just off Clinton Highway is another Honda-specific shop that won't screw you over with unneeded work. I can't say they're the cheapest.

I used Mark Lee for all my Hondas for years. Great shop. Friend of the family as well. Can't recommend enough.

I've also heard Dennis Hall is a solid choice in West Knoxville.

That's an easy home job, but $218 for everything isn't bad at all.

Don't use budget brakes. Follow invols advice and do it yourself or take it to one of the recommended mechanics

Additionally Advance Auto, google their discount code. Usually 25/30 % off of in store pricing. Order online, pick up at your local Advance Store.

It's a Honda, just about every kid from 18-30 can throw a set of brakes on a Honda.

Depends on what year Honda. Had a 98 Accord and that damn things had to be pressed on and off.

I was recently looking at first gen Honda Pilot and transmission issues were common enough to show up in the forums. Not sure if they use a similar transmission or not.
