How is this collapsing so fast under Mullen?

I know they own us…they always have regardless of who the coach is…this isn’t a s*** talking thread…this is a legit question that I’m truly baffled about…

You’re taking about a coach who has come in no worse than second in the east since he’s been there…won 10+ games in every non-Covid year that he’s been there…and yet his team has clearly quit and he’s about to be fired…

Honest to god question…how did it come to this?

I don’t know. Easy to just say the defensive coordinator, which is obvious.

But, something is up

Unfortunately I’ve seen it too many times here…scapegoating this assistant or that coordinator…but this steep of a drop off is almost always a sign of bigger issues…

Trust me…this fan base is very well versed in it for sure

Honestly I have no idea. It’s incredible to watch. They played so well at the beginning of this season, then after playing us they lost to KY the next week and just spiraled to the bottom faster than bowling ball sinking in water.

Your team is going to play about as consistent as your quarterback. Neither one of theirs is good. They have flashes of good plays but also turn the ball over too much. Erratic passing also.

There are some on the board that have said Mullen is a top 5 coach in college football. Yeah, no he isn’t. Mullen just isn’t that good.
So it's just that he's "not good" nothing else to explain how he can be have the best win% at MSU since the 1950s, win 21 games in 2 years at UF and everything collapses this year because he's "not good?"

I'm going to go out of on a limb and say something else is going on

It is plain and simple. Mullen is an elite OC and a mediocre Head Voaxh who is in over his head. Corch Irvin Meyers is getting them gang back together, Mullen to Jacksonville as OC since neither can win much without the other

Someone mentioned in another thread that he’s odd, doesn’t connect with players. There’s probably some truth to that. He’s never been a great recruiter and his lack of talent could be catching up to him.

Mullen is not a great recruiter he’s a quirky odd personality maybe he doesn’t connect to the players very well. There is def something going on though to cause this kind of meltdown. They could lose to Mizzou and FSU with the way they are playing now. I think he gets one more year but he’s got to make big changes on his staff he is way to loyal to his assistants especially Grantham.

Tennessee teams have quit mid season. Once that negative energy sets in, hard to reverse it.
It could be the locker room. Any number of factors. I wish I cared enough to browse swampgas and try and understand it. Something bad and epic is going on with this team and staff.

Seems like the players quit on him. He’s a weird dude. He doesn’t like recruiting. And he burned some bridges last year when he thought he was leaving for the NFL
