I've never followed basketball recruiting and I'm trying to get up to speed here. I have a couple of quick questions if someone has a minute to help.

1) How many players are typically in a signing class? (counting both scholarships and walk-ons)

2) I'm gathering our current commits are two SG and one PF. How many total players do we have room to sign in this class, and what other postions are we after?

Thanks-

For the second question, I'm pretty sure that we're going another forward, like Luke Cothran or Moses Abraham, even though he's a long shot up to this point.

I'm not positive, but counting the seniors that are leaving (or the players who are leaving for the NBA) is a pretty good indication on how many schollys a team have. So therefore, I think that we would have 4 schollys left. Now, that's assuming that McBee doesn't get one. But McRae, Harris, and Golden....I think that means we can sign one more. I'm not sure though, I could definitely definitely be wrong.

If we have to sign one more, I'll take Selby please.

You guys correct me, since I'm probably wrong. But I know we have at least 4 schollies.

Tennessee will have four scholarships to give next season. Mcbee will not receive a scholarship...

Abraham would make this already talented class that much better, but he is a long shot at this point. Selby will not be coming to Tennessee either, but I do think Pearl will try and land one more Power Forward in this class

McBee has already been guaranteed a scholarship by Pearl.

And you know this how?

And to answer above, we are allowed to have 13 on scholarship and the number of walk-ons doesn't matter. As of right now, we only have 9 players on official basketball scholarship - Chism, Goins, Hall, Hopson, Maze, Prince, Tatum, Williams, and Woolridge.

Negedu has been placed on academic scholarship due to his heart condition.

As proof, I invite you to recall Pearl saying that we beat Kansas with 6 scholarship players (Chism, Hall, Hopson, Maze, Prince, Woolridge) and 3 walk-ons (Bone, Pearl, McBee) with Goins, Tatum, and Williams being suspended.

SO, that means with the loss of the seniors (Maze, Chism and Prince) we will be down to 6 scholarship players again. This would mean we actually have seven to give out (either to walk-ons, transfers, or prep players). We currently have three of those spoken for in Harris, McRae, and Golden meaning we have four more to give out.

On that note, I live in Baton Rouge and when we played LSU, I attended an alumni luncheon at which he spoke. I asked Pearl about this situation and he personally told me (no link to a conversation) that he would like to go after one more big for this years class and that we probably wouldn't go after a PG because we had two good guards committed for 2011. Now if Selby wanted to play here, I don't think Pearl would turn him down.

So in reference to the four schollys that we have left to give, if we sign one more big, that would be three left. He also said he might give one to either Bone, McBee, or Maymon (don't forget about him). If all three get one, then we are finished. I doubt this will happen though. So we will save the remaining scholarships for the class of 2011.

On this note, we have offered scholarships to Jones and Ware for 2011. Their scholarships will come from Goins and Williams the only two juniors on scholarship on the team. If we want to sign more for 2011, Pearl will have to save some scholarships meaning he wouldn't award all three (McBee, Bone, and Maymon) of the walk-ons/transfers.

I hope this all makes sense.

P.S. As of right now, we don't have any AYP issues (from a VERY prominent booster at the same luncheon).

Tennessee did not push hard for Abraham, I understand they have another big man in their sights (currently committed to another school).

isn't bone a junior? ... if he was given a scholarship it would be open in 2011 for a new guy

We lose Tyler Smith, Josh Tabb, Emmanual Negedu, Wayne Chism, JP Prince, and Bobby Maze. We are bringing in Maymon, Harris, McRae and Golden, and that leaves 2 more available, so if they wanted to come, we could get both Abraham and Selby. I'd be suprised if we got either. The one for Selby is definitely still open, but Pearl may want to hold on to that other scholarship for another big man, maybe next year. Of course, if we don't get anyone else in this next class... he might just give McBee one next year.

This assessment is mostly right as the glaring hole is that UT does have an AYP issue. They were down to 12 scholarships this year with a penalty. We won't know if we get it back until later in the summer when the numbers are recalculated.

Negedu will be transferred to a medical scholarship, so we get his back for basketball.

McBee has basically been promised a scholarship based on effort and performance. That doesn't mean it will happen, but I'd be surprised if he doesn't receive one for next year.

Maymon will be on scholarship. He wouldn't transfer away from home to be a walk on.

Woolridge may decide to transfer to get playing time. I have no authority on that, but it has been tossed around too much not to have some validity. He may just not know what he is going to do. So, that may open up another.

Lastly, Chris Jones ('11 PG commit) may not make it to campus until '12. All I have heard and read is that he is probably destined for a year of prep school after his Sr. year ('10-'11). Again, I have no authority on that, just what I have seen and read. TIFWIW.

After all that, do your own math to figure out the numbers. My head hurts.

Those most confusing thing for me is graduation thing where we lost a scholarship for this current season because we had a bad APR (I can't remember what the three letters are).

The scholarship we lost, do we get it back or is it still gone? That will matter a lot for how we use our final scholarships.

Any help with this would be appreciated.

I have read just the opposite. Someone was saying that he was going to try to get in this year, instead of 2011. I am not saying you are wrong. Maybe someone who knows him can clarify.

On the Power Forward, subject: If we do not get a big man this year, Williams will be gone next year, Harris could be a one and done. All we would have left is Hall and Maymon (sp?) at 6'6". I am thinking that big men generally get knocked around their first year, so this would appear to leave a glaring gap in depth at least. It would therefore appear that we have a major need THIS YEAR for a big man, even if we are going to a smaller lineup in the future.

I have seen it both ways as well, but only once for the early entry. Who knows, but those close to him.

Harris will not be a one and done. He and his father have stated that education is important and will be around for 2 years. Some will say what's the difference between one and two years need to remember that these guys are on campus year round and can very easily cram 3 years worth of courses into 2 calendar years with summer school and mini terms (if they still have those??).

Also, the NBA has a tremendous uphill battle to come to an agreement on a CBA with the player's union. The season after next is in serious jeopardy, henceforth Harris would have nowhere to leave early to. Except Europe, which would be a little silly considering the above paragraph.
