Houston AD ready to match any offer to keep Herman
Openly saying a billionaire booster is backing it.

Whether it's truthful or not that's a bold statement.

I know money talks but unless Houston joins a power 5 conference I don't know that Herman would stay.

I think he stays. I don't see him going to Texas without Applewhite. I doubt Applewhite wants a second tour of duty in Austin.

I think the atmosphere at Texas is intimidating to a lot of potential coaches. If Houston matches the contract, why would he ever want to go somewhere that every decision is under the microscope 24/7? I think the Texas coaching search will be pretty tumultuous.

For the same amount of money, why would you want the additional pressure.

Exactly. For whatever reason, Strong was treated quite poorly there (aside from the huge paycheck). Potential coaches take notice. Hmm.. sounds like a place a little closer to home..

Texas boosters probably got a good laugh

considering its a football coach and not an outright bidding war on property or something but I can see Houston staying with them. Even if we jump straight to Harbaugh money Houston, with the right backing, can afford to keep up. unless you are talking making him the highest paid coach by a wide margin I doubt they are going to back down. And Texas, or whoever, has to clear the buyout as well.

it will be interesting to see what his pay comes out to be.

If Houston doesn't get in a power 5 conference, he's gone. Coaches want the money, but they also want to opportunity to be known as the best. Once Houston dropped the 1st game it was over for them. They could have won out and a 2 loss team would have got the nod from the SEC, ACC, or Big10.

not saying they can't but that Houston can make it real interesting. Remember Houston is paying 1 amount. Texas will be paying three. Strong's Buyout (10 million +), Hermans new salary (5million at minimum a year) and Hermans buyout, another couple million.

it may be enough to get them looking around.

Big 12 was their lone shot...regardless of record. They didn't cost themselves anything with the losses...the Big 12 had already shot them down. It would have still been nail biting to keep Herman, but the odds would have been better.

Tilman Fertitta ready to spend to keep Tom Herman as UH coach - Houston Chronicle

It's true.

The billionaire is Tilman Fertitta (Chairman of the UH BoR, owner of Fertitta Entertainment and its affiliates and the city's biggest mobster). Cougar High is currently being sued by the family of the late Judge Roy Hofheinz over the proposed name change of Houston's basketball arena from Hofheinz Pavilion to the Fertitta Family Center.

Tilman Joseph Fertitta (born June 25, 1957) is an American businessman, entrepreneur, television personality and the chairman, CEO and sole owner of Landry's, Inc., one of the nation’s largest restaurant corporations.[2][3] In 2013, his net worth was estimated at $2.4 billion, placing him at No. 235 on the Forbes 400 list of the wealthiest Americans;[4] Forbes calls him the “World’s Richest Restaurateur”.[5] Fertitta is also chairman of the Board of Regents of the University of Houston System.[6] After landing a reality tv show on CNBC, Fertitta became the star of Billion Dollar Buyer.

Nine billionaires normally trumps one. If Texas wants him they will get him.He may choose to stay put and do it his own way.

Saban loves it when rich schools get into bidding wars over other coaches.

That may be true, but the SEC is a whole 'nother animal. Especially at a school like LSU

This.

Big 12 are a bunch of idiots. Houston is a tier one school now and they have probably the 2nd best recruiting ground in America.

Had they added and Houston and Boise State.

People keep saying "Houston lost to Navy and SMU". Check the date when the BIG 12 decided not to expand with the dates that Houston lost.

It was a huge huge blow.

Big 12 could have had a great addition in Houston. In the past 4 years Houston has beaten
UCLA
FLORIDA STATE
OKLAHOMA
LOUISVILLE (2 years running)

Even more reason for Texas to say no.

Good point. Texas is not and was never interested in the Big 12's longterm success...hence the Longhorn Network. Why would they want to foster another potential powerhouse in their fiefdom?
