Did some on this message board and knoxville media make the Tennessee fanbase look last year with the whole gruden deal? I mean we as a fanbase were pretty much the laughing stock of the national media with the whole deal. Fake letters from webb school, pictures of gruden watching something on his laptop, he owns land in maryville, EA starting his show off every morning with gruden gruden gruden, hell some on here were freaking out about what color tie he wore on MNF. I look at the texas/ saban situation and say damn we went through the same bs last year. Did we really look that dumb?

We're not exactly top TMZ material...no one dwelled on Grudengate outside our realm...just us and the trolls that spend more time on here than their own boards

The rumor didn't spread to national media but they sure did have fun at our expense

Looking at the Texas situation makes me realize how long ago our NC was. To think Texas won it all in 2005 and they were in the BCS in 2009 and are still firing the guy (allegedly) makes you realize that NCAAF is a business where anything over 10 years or so is meaningless.

Did Grudengate make us look a little silly? Sure, but in the end, the fact that Tennessee had hired a jerk like Lane Kiffin and then a nitwit like Derek Dooley in the first place made it look insignificant and understandable. Real brilliant hires, Hammy.

OP,

Nevermind the Mike and Mike interview with Gruden and how there were 2000 posts breaking down every word he said and trying to find "meaning" in Gruden saying there was no truths to the rumors.

Gold Jerry! GOLD!

The Name BabyVol should be banned from VolNation - That poster stirred up the fanbase to the point it was embarrassing....People were calling into talkshows quoting him as a done deal that Gruden was the new coach.... Thank God all that is behind us & We Got Butch.....

On a related note, I am so sick of not being in the mix in the Bowl season. I have tried really hard to give a damn about all the Bowl game match ups, but it's to no avail.

To be fair, it seemed like there were only a handful of posters here who actually believed Gruden was coming. Certainly less than the ones who thought Butch was going to land Vonn Bell. It's just that those posters kept making up stuff "from inside sources" and posting about it ad nauseum.

And let's not forget that "the media" played a large role in the Gruden rumors. Hyams reported that Gruden had asked for a 10 year 50 million dollar deal (I think that was the number). There was some radio show in Chattanooga that was claiming that boosters already had made the deal. And then there was that reporter in Chattanooga, who is pretty well respected and claimed he had multiple sources that Hart scuttled the whole deal. And there were many other instances of the media feeding the rumor mill (didn't Clay Travis, at one point, claim it was happening?).

Anyway, I never believed that Gruden would come here. But, it's not like the fans who wanted to hold out hope didn't have plenty of people feeding them this stuff, either.
