How can a team shoot 27.5%, 10% from three pt line and still win a game over a ranked opponent. I didn't see the game but someone must have an answer.

Because for about 3/4 of The game neither team could hit the ocean with a rock standing on a pier. Lady vols played great defense in the last five minutes and finally got some timely shooting to pull away late.

It was a 1985 win. Vivien and Warlick/Summitt are sisters when it comes to defense (solid) and offense (cover your eyes).

Watching Belmont and KY. Why can Belmont find 3 point shooters and we the great LADY VOLS can't?

You want some ugly stats? We shot 18 percent in the first half. I mean, c'mon: Our offense is beyond bad. But we managed to beat a team that is as bad--or worse--than we are offensively. That's hard to believe--given these almost comically bad numbers--but not if you've followed Rutgers over the years.

Izzy Harrison was a monster in rebounding & shooting free throws the last 4 minutes. Harrison made a big difference under the basket & wanted to win more than anyone else.

Sometimes the stars just align for a win, even with the crappy output/production from our otherwise usual glorious offense. Now this is just a wild guess on my part, but I bet Rutgers offense being worse off than ours, helped us out tremendously with securing the victory too.

Holly's brilliant coaching. There can be no other explanation.... :)
Darth put down the Bud (lol) Rutgers shot like crap, they had only one real good offensive player (who could score inside and out), neither team could hit their asses with both hands, both teams made poor shot selections, Rutgers big girl got in file trouble, we had Izzy (stayed out of file trouble the 2nd half) and they did not, Jasmine Jones showed up the first half, LV hustled and played like they needed to win a low scoring game, we had more 5 stars to run in and out than they did, etc., I am sure I missed a thing or two but the afore mentioned is why I believe the LV's won.

You might as well ask a T-Rex why he can't wipe his own butt as to ask why there aren't a lot of points scored in the typical UT vs. Rutgers game. The teams just aren't built for it.

This is how it always is playing Rutgers.

Just my opinion but I feel like we could have easily scored a lot more points because a lot of those shots we're almost going in and barely missing.

That's essentially why you want to have a good defense so that you can win those kinds of games when the office isn't clicking or the shots just aren't falling.

Belmont went 2-10 from deep :dunno:

Tennessee has shooters, but relies on trying to pass to them when they're open as opposed to helping them get open. Missouri has Morgan Eye who can launch of 15 3's a game because they run plays for her. Tennessee has never run plays for the outside shooters; it's always been pound it inside, and if multiple defenders collapse, kick it out to an open shooter.

Tennessee needs to realize that the 3 is a weapon, and they have a few players that they can run plays for to mix up their offense instead of always going inside first.

Effort, toughness, defense, rebounds.

Yes that was a physical game, glad no one got hurt. I'm curious to see how we respond with a day rest.

Defense and rebounds win championships, cos against aggressive, athletic, physical teams, they are going to take you out of your offensive flow.

Lady Vols basketball, we are tougher than you.

They were getting one shot and that is all. They shot 31 percent for the game. They were out rebounded 54 to 42. We played zone and it squashed their offense one off balance outside shot and done on at least 25 possessions. Rutgers has no outside shooters. The game ultimately came down to the free throw line as they got in foul trouble and we converted them all down the stretch.
Regardless of what Holly says were in for a lot of losses if we can't find some scorers and shoot a better percentage. There will be a lot of teams that can hit outside shots against the zone.

BINGO! I think the question posed in this thread is relevant. Without Izzy, this team loses by ten. We saw in the first half, when she was still not in the flow, the LVs had no anchor point in their half court and were getting dominated in the paint.

Izzy came out with an attitude of "knee braced be damned" in the 2nd half and took over. And then everyone started to play better because they could more in their roles. With Izzy (once she gets back to 100%), the LVs can compete with most anyone. We still need other players to step up more (Graves and Carter in particular) but this ON THE ROAD win against Rutgers is the most ENCOURAGING Game of the year.

Difference to me watching the game was Izzy's confidence decided to show up in the 2nd half. I thought the team fed off of her presence in the 2nd half. When she air balled that jump shot in the first half that made my stomach sink. The first half she looked like her old freshman days, second half she looked like her sophmore year. She looked rusty, so I'm very optimistic what this girl is going to do at the end of the year. She needs a couple more games under her belt, then I think we can be a true legit elite 8 team.

Jasmine Jones I think deserved the game ball hands down though. Her athleticism is unmatched by anybody. I was very disappointed in Graves being blocked by a 5'9 guard in the paint. I know she goes by the "beast" but come on.

This game should of been a blowout. I LOVED the way the team created open shots for themselves. I thought for the most part, 50% of the vols shots were unforced, open shots. If we would of made those bunnies ... score not even close. I LOVED they way we got to the paint and we didn't jack up 3 pointers. We only shot 10 the whole game. I give credit to Holly for this win. She didn't let the team jack up 3 pointers and they CONTINUED to attack the basket.

Maybe the local optometrist in Knoxville could hand out some free eye exams? Whats the solution here?

It will take several games, maybe weeks for Izzy to return to form. Her leaping is obviously compromised by her knee. She missed some lay-ups just because she could not elevate like normal.

On the block, Rutgers has very athletic players with long arms and who can jump. And in this case, we are talking about Scaife. She definitely plays taller than 5-9. On our side, Carter blocks shots by taller players and we cheer so let's give the opponent her due as well.

Good Point about Carter
I think we all agree Harrison will be key. I HOPE and PRAY they are smart about her return/recovery/rehab

They did play tough. Lots of banging. We also hit a spurt at the right time. A nice win win for the Lady Vols! We are a much more confident team with Izzy in the line up.
