we have 20 commits plus one Juco and the transfers... as of right now how do we sit on numbers? Assuming all the guys that haven't announced yet but can are coming back. We are at 83 limit right? Im pretty sure we have enough space for 4 more commits but after that can we bring in more transfers without someone else leaving?

I think you are close, but I donā€™t know the exact numbers. Most likely we will have more available spots as some on the roster hit the portal.

Go to the Recruiting board and pinned at the top is a great in depth Current Roster analysis by LWSVOL. Includes signees and transfers. Start from there. Some guys will just quit football, some will enter the portal, and usually we have some go on medical schollies. Someday I predict WITHOUT BASIS we will have some NIL offers to entice some to clear spots earning a little money without being scout team targets, maybe as analysts or interns to maintain interaction with team and keep cheapest tuition etc. Just makes sense to clear space for the 85 (83) limit, the only real regulator on squad size anymore.

CJH said in his Q&A that since the inception of NIL and the transfer portal it's a roller coaster ride. Players have until January something to go into the portal. And then again in the spring. He noted that we picked up Pili and McCoy after our bowl game last year. He wasn't certain that we would keep everyone that makes up the 84. And of course, he can't even mention a prospective recruits name that they may be in communication with.

He didn't mention that NIL allows teams to classify a player as a walk on, but let NIL pay their way through school. I would also bet that some teams have plans to move current scholarship players to walk on status and let NIL pay their way if that is cheaper than, paying NIL for a big-time recruit.

I foresee rules changes about the 85 scholarships changing. NIL and the transfer portal have really made the landscape fluid. I just hope that we are 100% full strength at the start of the 2024 season. No more depleted roster excuses or talk. Even it was true.

it will be 2028 when they can get back to full roster unless they pick a year and take a complete hit on the scholarship reductions.

kinda wild.. that means there are likely to be a lot more departures if we are bringing anyone else in. or some guys that are expected to return won't. I'm worried about WR and CB depth. That being said of all positions those are 2 where a freshman can make an impact early easiest.

If we are at 84. The maximum is 85 for Division I - FBS institutions. I realize we have limits we can offer during a cycle, but NIL and the transfer portal have erased that issue. Or am I missing something?

I'm sorry, I don't understand what you asking?

We are under sanctions and have to play with 12 less scholarships over a five year period (2023-27). We played at 83 this season so we have to reduce the next four season. They want to play with 82 or 83 to meet the sanctions reduction but they could take all in a single season. Just so they reduce 10 more by end of 2027.

The only limitation is the 85 (or max number a school can have in the case of sanctions) number. You have to not be over that any time school is in session. Tennessee would like to be at 82 or 83 for 2024 season. They will have no issue getting that number.

there will be more departures post bowl game. Our number is important at January enrollment time.

For sure. I think the bowl practice will give coaches a good idea of what moves to make and guys will know where they stand more. We have a lot of EE's and transfers on campus so likely to get spicy. I feel like we lose some secondary guys and dline. Next years team will be really young overall since this year's squad was more seniors and freshmen. We are really thin in the middle classes especially if you look at the 2 deep..

if no else leaves before enrollments, they should be fine for the spring on numbers.

withe the early enrollees, they will be at 76 scholarship players in January. So that leaves room for 6 more transfers before enrollment. Of course, they would have to weed out players before the remaining freshman came in for school in June.

I forgot about the reduced scholarships.

What I have heard the talking heads say is that teams can now use NIL money to bring in players instead of scholarships, thus making the 85 limit a moot point. They just call them PWO, WO, or just part of the 100-118 total that most teams have.

It appears to me that we are in great shape on wr, don't know about cb depth

Expect more departures in April after guys figure out they aren't going to get the playing time they expect.

Talent yeah but outside of Squirrel its young and/or untested. I mean assuming Thornton and Bru do not return the only other players we have at skill positions returning are Sampson, Webb and Nimrod. None of our other WR's RB's or TE's have played meaningful snaps. Bru and Thornton's return would change that significantly. Bru especially, since he is just as important as a blocker as he is catching the ball. Is it just me or in 2022 and 2023 a lot of our longer runs/screens tended to happen on his side of the feild.

Pardon my ignorance, but why does the 85 scholly limit matter anymore? Cruits can get a $100K NIL deal and it doesn't count towards the cap. 6 and a half dozen the other.

The ncaa has really made college football (and most sports for that matter) miserable for coaches and fans.
