How good was this offense? Let us count the number of records tied, broken or outright shattered.

This offense becomes even more incredible when you start looking at the team’s NCAA rankings. I haven’t rechecked the stats since the bowl game, but prior to the bowls the Vols led the nation in points, points per game, yards, and yards per game - but were DEAD LAST in time of possession (Avg TOP prior to bowl was between 26 and 27 minutes; and in the bowl they held it less than 24 minutes). Their points per minute of possession is insane - somewhere north of 2.0. No one else is remotely close. Imagine where these numbers would be if the Vols would have evenly split TOP with their opponents.

I think the TOP stat also sheds some light on our defensive performance when you consider the fact our defense was on the field more than any other unit, offense or defense, in the nation.

More impressive than Kirby Smart considering the talent differential.

With numbers like that, does that make us WRU, RBU or QBU?

A strong argument could be made for all of the above, if we start getting elite RB signees or transfers again. I would, for example, welcome the Tulane running back, who gutted USC for 205 yards and 4 touchdowns on the ground, to head to Big Orange country if he wants to hone his craft against a higher level of competition than he usually faces.

Of course, even if we go undefeated, untied and unscored upon, and win every game by an average of 49 points, it probably still will not result in anyone bringing a Heisman Trophy back to Knoxville.
