How is the new popular punt formation effective?

I despise the new formation that a lot of teams are doing. I see a lot more blocks and when they blocked Georgia's I thought "well naw dah".

Am I wrong in not understanding why teams have swapped to it?

I'm not a fan either, but it's become the norm in the past 10 years or so because it's easier to release downfield.

I guess, but i'd rather not risk the block. I mean, I almost EXPECT a block every day.

I don't see how exactly but I think it is supposed to have the benefit of keeping the defensive men from sliding inside of the gunners on a block call by the receiving team and disguise potential fakes.

The old formation the receiving team could overpower the blockers at the line and once they are through there is no second level of blockers. Also since the punt is going out up the middle the punting team wants to block rushers up the middle away to the outside, the new formation gives you extra blockers up the middle. We blocked the punt because one of the UGA backs blocks his man the wrong direction (inside toward the direction of the punt instead of to the outside. Watch the two backs on the left of the screen take their men to the outside, but the man on the right shoves Jalen Reeves-Maybin to the middle.)

That's right but when a punt is blocked it's usually due to a missed block, bad snap, the punt being to low, or the punter taking to long to punt. I don't really think it matters how you line up as long as everyone knows where to cover and the punter gets the ball off quickly. I'd say 80% of blocked punts come from a bad snap or the punter not properly kicking the ball right, either by kicking it to low or by taking to long to go through his motion to get the kick off.

I'm guessing the logic behind it is that the players are basically in their lanes at the snap.

Also not a fan.

Luckily Orta didn't get a targeting call for that shot on the punter. Especially with the way these refs were calling everything against us.

Was that Orta? I thought I heard the announcer say it was King that almost got that 1.

Either way I agree with you that we were lucky that one wasn't called. :good!:

speaking of king, where is that man?

Still at LB or back at TE? he's an athlete and I feel like he'll get on the field a decent amount in the next couple years

Good posts guys. I kinda had the idea on coverage and extra blockers, but it just seems more blocks lately for teams. Because now they have an easier path past the 1st level and the can basically barrel their way past the 2nd level.

The shield formation makes much more sense to me than the old formation. It's better for downfield coverage and it's typically been effective at guarding the punter. Occasionally, a guy will miss a block, but that could happen with the old formation, too.

Most coaches view the shield as easier to teach. I think Lou Holtz was the first I-A coach to adopt it when he was at South Carolina, because I remember SC started using it sometime around the early to mid 00's (maybe 2003?). At this point, seems like everybody is doing it.
