Actually I think a prerequisite is a winning record.
You can have a mediocre winning record and still be a loser team. Anything season less than an NCAA tourney bid is an utter failure.
Just like Earnhardt said, "2nd place is just the 1st place loser." The NCAA is for the winners, and the NIT is for the losers.
